Yes, Mamdani pushed socialist-leaning policies favoring taxpayer support for parades and public events as equity-driven investments, countering austerity calls from rivals like Cuomo. In the heated exchange, his defenses escalated into what many perceived as rants, especially when interrupted on budget impacts. The clip captures that raw clash, blurring policy into parody.

Today I learned that the Museum of African American shortlisted "Brassroots Democracy" for the Stone Book Award, in the company of so many brilliant and vital books. Winners will be announced in October. So grateful to the committee for reading this love letter to jazz.

@jasonhickel Do you mind pointing me to Rostow said so? I was just teaching him as a foil to world-systems theory.

Walt Rostow is a good example of this, but it is also evident in the Pentagon Papers, as detailed in Chomsky's book "The Backroom Boys".

It's fascinating how, in the 1950s, US officials acknowledged - on the record - that socialism in the global South was a more effective development model than capitalism. Their response was to impose crushing sanctions on *every single* socialist country, to deny them access to necessary technologies and capital goods in hopes of limiting their industrialization.

Get a primary care doctor they say, but when you finally get an appt 6 months later the receptionist is literally the meanest person alive, the doctor is like why the fuck are you here you idiot, you giant asshole, and then you get billed $350 that insurance denied coverage for.

@alz_zyd_ Well, just that the difference between reading a ChatGPT summary and reading the text is like loading a game with maxed out characters versus going through the leveling process. The point is not primarily or only the take away but the cognitive mapping from long term engagement.

Starting to feel like a big barrier to undergrads reading "classics" is the dense English in which they're written or translated into. Is there much gained by learning to read "high-register" English (given some of these texts aren't even originally in English?)

Like, there is no particular reason high register English translations should preserve meaning more faithfully than low register English! Sure give me an argument if you think there is one, but I see no reasonable case to be made for why high-register should be higher fidelity
