Abilene Was Promised a Massive Jobs Boom From the Stargate Data Center. Local leaders sold the huge OpenAI backed project as the answer for our economy. They approved an 85 percent property tax break on billions in development. On top of that Texas hands out over one billion dollars a year in sales tax breaks to data centers statewide.The pitch sounded great. Thousands of construction workers would pour in and lift up the whole town. Here is what actually happened. The construction boom came and went. Now the facility runs on automation with only about 100 permanent employees. That is it. Our tax dollars built a high-tech warehouse for Big Tech that needs almost nobody on site once it opens. It will also pull enough electricity to power more than a million homes which strains our grid and drives up energy bills for families. Plus, it draws millions of gallons of water in a state already facing shortages. Texas taxpayers deserve better than this. When are we going to stop subsidizing these empty promises? 🔊🔊 Side note: This is just one example of what's happening all over the country.
