As we’ve been back for a full term I thought it a good idea to explain where I’m at with ICUE, so here’s a 10 year history in 10 paragraphs!

We love leaving it late! Another epic contest in a cup final for us, winning 4-2 in Extra Time. Credit to St Mary’s for pushing us so hard, but these lads have got everything and I couldn’t be more proud of them. ⚪️🌑 @CorinthiansIOM

This is something I’ve always neglected and battled with. Having so many ideas, so much ambition, that I fail to take stock on the progress I’ve made or steps I’ve taken to move forwards. Game changer.

This is something I started doing at the turn of the year and it’s having a dramatic impact. Yes it allows you to review whether you’re successfully working towards things and amend your strategy, interventions and plan, but also of huge relevance is how it reinforces progress.

Talent ID programs built on this philosophy would be far more successful, catching the right ones and supporting them to reach greater heights.

At ICUE I developed a Sparks program, where talent ID was built on values, identifying children who (whilst they had an individual spark, a technical quality) had a resilience, a determination to improve, a work ethic and desire to be coached and practice alone, do the extra bits

“Stop judging talent; start observing character” This is where I think traditional Talent ID gets it so, so wrong. Obsessed with the here and now, neglecting understanding the soft skills, the unseen, the potential.

Tony Pulis spent almost a year filming a documentary series for Sky Sports called "Chasing the Dream," investigating the academy system in English football. What he found should concern every coach and parent involved in youth football. 91% of young players in academies never play a professional game, but it's what happens to them after they're released that he thinks needs urgent attention. Every time I’ve watched England Under-21s train at home or abroad over the past five years, Ashley Cole was out there early, laying out the balls and cones (pic below), discussing the session with the head coach Lee Carsley. He gave individual instruction to defenders like Levi Colwill and Tino Livramento. They spoke highly of Cole’s counsel and desire to improve them as players. His work ethic and humility inspired them. In matches, Cole would sort the subs with the fourth official. No airs or graces, even though Cole was a genuine superstar as a player. He was the most consistent of the Golden Generation, England’s greatest ever left-back, seventh on his country’s all-time appearance list with 107 caps, winner of seven trophies with Arsenal, nine with Chelsea. He stood up to Cristiano Ronaldo and Arjen Robben. He nailed his two shootout penalties in the 2008 and 2012 UCL finals. He was an elite competitor and winner. After retiring at 38, Cole could have played golf or gone into punditry. Instead, he’s built a coaching career. Along with some other reporters, I helped Cole do the media module of his Pro Licence at St George’s Park. Cole's attention to detail and desire to deliver in his second career was very clear to us. Cole worked his way up, assisting Frank Lampard at Derby, coaching in Chelsea’s academy when Lampard went to the Bridge, and then assisting Lampard at Everton. He assisted Wayne Rooney at Birmingham City. He also assisted Carsley in his six games as caretaker of England’s seniors before becoming a full-time FA coach. Cole, 45, now takes on his first managerial role – at Cesena in Serie B. It’s only until the end of June but an experience, an education and with the possibility of a longer stay. Good luck to Cole. He’s earned the opportunity. He’s grafted for it.

Why are people suggesting that Liverpool line up is wild?!

The suggestion is it’s a problem Rio is looking more dependable than experienced players. It’s not; it’s what you can get with young players. Not restricted by fear, the occasion, contracts etc. They play, they’re free. Also, this kid could be incredible, we don’t know. Chance!
