I am sometimes, even often, wrong. But I am confident I am rarely this wrong.

When Emperor Caracalla gave citizenship to everyone in the empire in 212 AD, it actually didn’t turn them all into Romans. It actually just made being Roman meaningless, like making silver coins of 95% lead and expecting to not have inflation. Contra Gibbon, the real reason Rome collapsed was because it stopped producing enough Romans to still be Rome. What seems like merely a nominal, symbolic change, actually mattered a lot.

A new citizen who said the oath yesterday is just as much a citizen as Tucker Carlson. There’s no two tiers in citizenship.

Research from the e61 Institute shows that typical young Australian women now out-earn typical young men on an hourly basis by around 7–8 percent among those working full-time hours.

And there are certain kinds of shows and movies that are far less dysregulating than others. The previous gen of parents seems to not be sensitive to this. They don't understand that modern shows cut scenes every three seconds for novelty and this holds children's attention, but also makes them more emotionally anxious and angry because real life doesn't give this kind of novelty every three seconds. Older shows like Little Bear and Franklin and Rupert Bear have coherent, complex stories, natural colours, good language and longer individual scenes.

When id Software published Wolfenstein 3D (before my time), the way to find the secrets was to walk all around the level, bumping into every wall. When I joined id Software, John Romero told me that Doom would be different. One of the fundamental rules was that EVERY secret in Doom had to have a hint. The wall might have a different texture, or be offset. Or something. Looking back, John didn't always follow his own rule, but I did. One of my favorite secrets was only visible on the minimap, where I hid an arrow pointing directly at the secret door. The arrow wasn't visible in the real world. You can see it below. Partly because of John's rule, I feel that no trap in any game, even a tabletop roleplaying game like Call of Cthulhu or D&D, should just go POP! and surprise the players. There ought always be a clue. Maybe the deadly door handle is shaped like a cobra head. Maybe there is green liquid dripping from the chest's lock. Maybe the super valuable treasure is atop a glowing pedestal with no obvious wards or barriers (I've used this one a lot).

I think there is a legitimate argument against video games. For the screen takes people away. TV is worse in this regard for non learning use of video watching. Whenever possible people should use such time to play TTRPG's, board games, or card games as these are more family.
Old Tory Right - Scholastic Fundamentalist@rightwingnutrs

I’ve seen “conservative” religious women often construct whole religious systems that make their husband nothing but a money making machine for the family.

This shows how the original clone wars writing in the early to mid 2000s was way better than Dave Filoni's version.

If you think she regrets this idiocy now that thousands lost their jobs, you don't understand democrats. The results never matter. It's the public show of 'caring about the little guy'- that's the motivation. The whole point. Reality is irrelevant.
Elizabeth Warren@SenWarren

I've warned for months that a @JetBlue-@SpiritAirlines merger would have led to fewer flights and higher fares. @JusticeATR and @USDOT were right to stand up for consumers and fight against runaway airline consolidation. This is a Biden win for flyers! apnews.com/article/jetblu…

California, like other blue states with pension problems, is counting on a federal bailout - doesn’t everyone know this?
sourcery@sourceryy

.@friedberg says "California is functionally bankrupt": "People don't realize how screwed California is. I worry that if California falls, so does the union." "We're $250 billion to $1 trillion short." "If it was the federal government, they would just print more money. California doesn't have the ability to print money, so California has to pay this out, and you can't restructure retirement benefits." "There's a Supreme Court case in California that said once an employee has been offered retirement benefits, even if they're currently an employee, you can never restructure their retirement benefits. It has to stay forever." "And the state cannot declare bankruptcy. There's no way for the state to functionally declare bankruptcy. There's no law to allow it." "No state has ever declared bankruptcy, and the the retirement benefits sit senior to the bonds in California. So you have to pay out the retirement benefits before you pay out all the bond holders that have loaned California the money that they use to run all their programs and services." " This isn't about taxes and Billionaire Tax Act. I don't think you can tax your way out of this problem. People will just leave the state." "California's functional bankruptcy is a major risk to the country and we need to figure out what we can change to fix it." At the @HillValleyForum 2026
