As surface areas grow in orbital patterns, risks of random collisions grow non-linearly. Each collision will produce potentially hundreds or thousands of pieces of debris in randomised vectors, travelling at 24,000 km/sec vs other objects. It wouldn’t take many of these to trigger a chain reaction wiping out the integrity of entire orbital zone around Earth.
