Packing cheaper lunches is a great idea. But you’re not going to be able to eat enough baloney sandwiches to cover the cost of a $350k starter home on average.
That’s before you even get into college debt and lack of job opportunities.

I suppose I'll be accused of being a leftist for saying this, but working professionals shouldn’t have to brown‑bag it to succeed in a modern society. I don't mean that in the “everyone deserves a pony” sense. I mean it in the “my car doesn’t sound right” sense.

If my whole family ate sandwiches for every meal 3 times a day only our grocery bill would still be 800 dollars a month. To follow budgeting guidelines, I would need to make 64,000 dollars a year…to afford to only eat sandwiches. You can’t budget your way out of poverty.

Some people get outraged when you show them success is possible, if even through temporary sacrifice and hardship. They don’t want to be told “You can do this.”
They want to be told “It’s the boomers/zionists/capitalists fault.” Victimhood feels good. But it gets you nowhere.
Yes, there are challenges. Yes, things are unfair. Do you think you can complain your way out of life’s challenges? Do you think you can just vote away life’s fundamental unfairness?
No matter the circumstances, you can focus on what you can control and do your best with gratefulness. This is still the greatest country on Earth for that.
You might be wildly successful, you might not. But I can promise you’ll be happier.

I’m learning that getting older means graduating from main character to supporting cast. From child, student, suitor to parent, teacher, spouse. You grow ever more deeply invested in other people’s successes, if you’re doing it right, and realizing what a privilege that is. You come to see and feel that the richer and deeper your own life becomes, the less you want to be the center of attention, the more you understand that the money spot of the human soul is in the cheering section, where the self is lost in love. I think this carries on forever, by the way.
