For what it’s worth, ministers loyal to Starmer insist he can and must survive the Mcsweeney resignation because - to quote one - “the country doesn’t want a new prime minister” (to be discussed) and “neither Wes [Streeting] or Angela [Rayner] have made any kind of convincing case for how they would be better” (it’s early days though). They believe that now the jeopardy to the PM and the stability of the government is a very real thing, back benchers will “grow up” and rally behind the PM. Though they accept the coming few days will be perilous for him. Much depends on who he appoints as his new chief of staff and how he reconstructs his Downing Street operation. Apparently he has been giving “much thought” to this in recent days.
