The new Liberal leader’s core challenge is brutally simple: most voter groups no longer support his party, Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Baby Boomers, basically every major demographic cohort in the country. But the warning lights are flashing brightest in two places, where support is down in the low single digits: young women and Gen X. Gen X is the first cohort to really buck the old political and social orthodoxy and it shows up in how they relate to parties and institutions. They are a generation formed by disruption, not stability. Gen X are often described as the “latchkey” generation, shaped by higher rates of dual-income households and divorce, and a general expectation of self-reliance. That tends to produce lower baseline trust in institutions and less automatic loyalty. These traits are higher outside large urban cities. Less “rusted on” by default. Australian Election Study reporting (summarised by the Parliamentary Library) shows clear generational differences in first preferences, with younger cohorts (including Gen X vs Boomers) materially less Coalition-leaning, and a broader pattern of major-party dealignment over time. The broader Western pattern: across established democracies, research finds each successive generation since the Boomers has tended to be more likely to break away from supporting established right-of-centre parties (even after accounting for age/life-cycle effects). That’s consistent with Gen X being a “break” cohort rather than a Boomer clone. Oh and on women, the party carries an extra burden of credibility. It took the Liberal Party around 80 years to appoint a female leader and then removed her after 276 days. Aside from young women rejecting the Liberal Party, as in they have never voted for it, Liberal voting Gen X women are the biggest group to have shifted since December to One Nation.
