Trump is working hard to convince the American people that the war was necessary in order to justify the rising price of gas at the pump. He is lying. Iran was not building nuclear weapons, let alone on the verge of using them. Iran entered a deal that verified the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, from which Trump unilaterally and unjustifiably withdrew while Iran was fully complying. In fact, Iran continued to abide by the agreement for a full year after the U.S. withdrawal. It then re-engaged in negotiations, only to be attacked in the middle of the diplomatic process last June. After that, Iran entered yet another round of talks aimed at resolving the dispute diplomatically, and the United States struck again while meaningful progress was being made. The real reason for the surge in gas prices is that Trump chose to launch a war at Israel’s behest, disregarding the interests of the American people. He acted on the mistaken assumption that Iran was too weak to respond effectively. Americans are now paying the price for that miscalculation. All other explanations are pure fabrication.
