When I first moved to LA I’d take the metro to work/school and always found it pleasant even late at night. Now that I have to drive to work people attempt to kill me with their vehicle on a daily basis

My parents married at 19, drove one car, had three kids before 25, lived in a dank, dark basement apartment before renting a tiny house and then twins came along. They bought their first modest house at 36 and lived in it for the rest of their lives. They never had the latest or greatest and my Dad could fix everything. We never ate out. They too talked about the rationing and struggles growing up during the Great Depression.

My high school dropout boomer parents got married at 18 and 17 and lived in a cold water (no hot water) flat in the core city of St. Louis. They had three kids and rented apartments for 17 years before they bought their first modest home. They both worked multiple jobs and drove beater cars or took the city bus. AND they were thankful because they didn't have to do all of that during the depression which was worse. This was the common experience of most of our neighbors as well. That's why they were called working class. You are so spoiled and pampered you have no idea. Sit down and shut up You can complain and blame others or you can work your rear off for decades with no vacation.

Then, after many, many rounds of testing, I was chosen to attend U.S.M.A.P.S. and to apply to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. "As you can imagine, most of my classmates at West Point Prep were there with a singular mission: to be a West Point graduate and serve in our military. Focus, drive, a plan, and zero compromise. I, on the other hand, was one of the few with doubts and inner conflict. "So when my heart spoke louder than the outside influencers and I declined my appointment to West Point, most of those around me saw it as a huge mistake. But a handful were very supportive. They knew me well enough to respect that decision. One of those supportive classmates was my cross-country teammate, Randy George. "If you've been wading through the flood of news lately, you may recognize that name. Randy went on to become a four-star general and Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. He was approaching his 40th year of service. "I can't even imagine how disappointed and upset he must feel for having been “asked” to retire early. So I'm just here to return that favor of support. We're here for you, Randy. Might be time for a beer or three. See you soon."

We called their houses and hoped they picked up instead of their parents. Or if they had a beeper, we’d page them. Or we’d just show up and see if they were home.
