My train home from Seattle this past weekend was canceled due to a landslide north of Vancouver, WA. I’m not positive where it occurred, apart from it being in the general area around “Felida”, but I’d say this complex is a fair guess. Mind your backyards, folks.

@HudnutKen It was the biggest earthquake I’ve ever felt! We felt it for about 2 minutes in south Orange County.

Last Stop Zillah, Yakima Valley. Deposits from the floodwaters that backed up behind Wallula Gap creating a lake. Each rythmite represents a separate flood. Since the thicknesses decrease upwards, decrease in magnitude. Lots of evidence to refute the single flood theory here.

This is satellite image of California imagines what the state looked like during the Gold Rush (c. 1851). What stands out the most is the incredible size of Tulare Lake in Central CA, once the largest lake west of the Great Lakes, reaching up to 3.5 times the size of Lake Tahoe.

Rail wouldn’t be having a hard time getting support if it was like this inside. (Southern Pacific Daylight, c. 1950?) Take notes, @Amtrak .

I’m visiting Japan in May! Any ideas for geotourism to see on the coast between Tokyo and Osaka (except for Fuji and Hakone)?

Back from Death Valley - I’ve been there in extreme wind before, but it was always gusty. This time it was near-constant highway-speed winds.

It is odd how much you learn when data processing doesn’t work. I know lots about how not to post-process GPS data now.

Couple more: first time at the tallest dune at Mesquite Flat, Crystal Spring (Ash Meadows NWR), family picture at the Death Valley fault (near Artists Pallette), first time at the bottom of Ubehebe Crater.

3rd image was an accident for this post, but while you’re here, any idea what animal makes large burrow middens(?) in Death Valley’s mountains?

Hiked up to the exposed fault plane of the Towne Pass fault, Death Valley. Very cool outcrop of fault breccia and Tin Mountain Limestone, definitely worth the 50+ mph winds on the way up!

I’m going to Death Valley tomorrow for the first time in 4 years. That interval is probably the longest in my life I’ve been away from there. I am very excited 😃

There is probably going to be another eruption in Iceland this week. That sort of forecasting is often not possible for volcanoes around the world. But it is here. How come? Read my @QuantaMagazine feature on Iceland’s magma hunters to find out.

NEW: Iceland is facing years of volcanic eruptions. Several have already ambushed a town, but scientists managed to get people out of danger every single time. How? By the power of physics. Iceland’s magma-hunting scientists rock. Me @QuantaMagazine -> quantamagazine.org/inside-scienti…

@joelgombiner Got it! I got to explore Moses Coulee last spring, and now I need to explore more of that scoured area beneath the ice sheet. Amazing area!

@BetterGeology In the case of the tunnel channels, the subglacial meltwater eroded downward into bedrock rather than upward into the ice. If you zoom in on the map, you'll see that the eskers (yellow) are smaller and with a different morphology and planform.

This tunnel channel network formed beneath the Okanogan Lobe during times of maximum glacial extent, and was later draped with eskers and moraines during deglaciation.
