@FromPhDtoLife I’m about 8mo into a max 3yr post doc in the government sector. Compared to academia/grad school…. My career, mental health, financial security have all done such a dramatic 180 (in the good way) I’m not sure I have many “concerns” towards my future career. More like unknowns

What are current postdocs most concerned about these days when it comes to their careers? What do you think?

@FromPhDtoLife I don’t think PhDs bring anything “different” to the table, but I do think they are capable of bringing their expertise to the table (or workforce) more rapidly. (I.e.You learn in 5y of a PhD what a nonPhD learns in 10y)

Have a PhD? Do you now work among people who don't necessarily have graduate degrees? Do you think there's *something* about your training/education/experience that's different from what other smart, dedicated etc. professionals bring to the table? What are those things?

For anyone who needs to hear this: You don't have to finish your PhD. A tiny percentage of the population has a doctorate, and that means most highly successful/happy/meaningfully employed people don't have them. Not having one won't be relevant once you broaden your horizons.

@SantiRCastillo Quitting is not failing. For me knowing that quitting was an option, that the stress and situation was temporary was enough to drag me across the finish line… but if it had taken *any* longer I would have left. In my Google calendar I had an event that said decide if you’re done

I’m so excited to say that I’ll be joining the Department of Biology @EmoryUniversity as an Assistant Professor, starting in January!! My lab will use the Drosophila taste system as a model to study how neural circuits transform sensory input into flexible behavior. 🪰🧠
