Yesterday, I visited a primary health center in Enugu and I almost shed tears.
Honestly, what I witnessed was not just neglect, but a painful reminder of how far we’ve allowed one of the most critical pillars of our healthcare system to fall. Primary Healthcare (PHC) in Nigeria is going under the loop. These centers, which should be the first line of defense for millions, have become ghost structures as they are; underfunded, understaffed, and in many cases, utterly forgotten.
It is disheartening that those entrusted by law and duty to uphold the integrity of our healthcare system have turned a blind eye, leaving Communities to fend for themselves. Women in labor, children in need of vaccines, the elderly seeking basic care, are all being failed daily.
We cannot continue like this. PHC must be revived, not just in policy documents, but in visible and impactful ways. The people deserve better. Nigeria deserves better.
Lest I forget, Nigerians in the diaspora and NGOs have made significant contributions to primary healthcare, and their efforts deserve sincere recognition. May God bless them richly.
