Chelsea's systematic financial & accounting cheating over years in the Abramovich era - a fine. Some Southampton bloke taking pics of Middlesbrough players running about a bit - a sporting sanction? Really?
Henry Winter@henrywinter

The outrage about Spygate is understandable. If proven, it’s cheating. It’s seeking to gain a sporting advantage over an opponent. Let’s hope this ire is also now focused on other varieties of cheating in football, namely the amount of deceit that can stain games... 1/2

Johnston had the unusual distinction of playing for 3 different Glasgow clubs. European Cup winner Ronnie Simpson also did with Celtic, Queen's Park and Third Lanark, but are there any other examples - or any that played with more than three?

He's one of those unusual players for whom the need to play club football seems an annoying distraction between international appearances. It's been a decade since his last good club season and yet clubs seem to still to be willing to take a chance on him.
Fabrizio Romano@FabrizioRomano

🚨🇨🇴 James Rodriguez, set to leave Minnesota United from next week as it’s over with MLS club. James will be a free agent again from June as he’s focused on World Cup with Colombia, as @MicheleG3 reports.

A name I did not know is Piet van Reenen, a player who is Ajax's all-time record scorer ahead of Cruyff. He scored 283 goals from 242 games between the wars.

Less remembered is how dominant ARG strikers were in the 70s and 80s there. Ligue 1's top scorer was either Carlos Bianchi or Delio Onnis every season between 1972-73 and 1983-84, bar one. Hugo Curioni, Hector Yazalde, Roberto Cabral & Victor Trossero all scored at high rates too

'Caught up in the emotion of the occasion'. I marvel at Henry's perpetually florid and emotionally overwrought language. If ever the football writing dries up then he could have a rewarding career writing bodice-rippers.
Henry Winter@henrywinter

Ben White clearly made an innocent mistake when walking across the Atletico Madrid crest. He's not showing a lack of respect. He’s caught up in the emotion of the occasion. Simeone father and especially son were unimpressed… #AFC 1/2

What a ridiculously good half of football this has been in Paris. I have no affinity with either team but I'm applauding some of the incredible standard and the audacious footballl being played by both sides.

This and many of the comments underneath shows that people have not bothered to even look up on Wikpedia the actual story of the Roma game. The referee was not bribed. The Anderlecht one was.

25/04/1984: A night of dishonesty and subterfuge in European football involving British clubs. Both Dundee Utd and Nottingham Forest had won their semi-final 1st legs 2-0 at home. The 2nd legs saw referee bribes and controversial decisions galore as both sides lost 0-3.

@mattleslie74 @MikaelReferee @FootballInT80s No this did not happen. The fixers took the money from Roma and told them they had fixed the ref which they hadn't. He refereed the game fairly and Roma won fairly. Obviously their general behaviour was terrible, but the referee was not fixed at all - unlike the Anderlecht one.

Lazio beat Atalanta 2-1 on penalties in tonight's Coppa Italia semi. Steaua Bucharest beat Barcelona 2-0 on pens in the 1986 European Cup Final, but has a team ever won a penalty shoot-out 1-0?
