Overnight into May 24, Russia hit Kyiv with one of the largest combined strikes on the capital in the past year. At least one person killed, 24 injured, damage reported across every district. The first wave landed around 1 a.m., with more after 3. Ukraine's Air Force counted 14 Iskander-M and KN-23 ballistic missiles and 250 attack drones, aimed mainly at the capital. Air defense brought down 6 of the ballistic missiles and 128 drones, with another 117 jammed or lost from radar. Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia were also hit. It came hours after Zelensky warned, citing Ukrainian and Western intelligence, that Russia may be preparing an Oreshnik intermediate-range missile strike on Kyiv. The Oreshnik is the weapon Moscow first fired at Dnipro in late 2024, aimed as much at Western capitals as at Ukraine. Six of fourteen ballistic missiles intercepted, fewer than half. My read on the timing: pairing a record-scale conventional strike with an Oreshnik warning the same night looks like deliberate sequencing, pressure stacked on pressure while the West debates the next aid package.

BYD ranks #2 at 16.9% market share with full vertical integration. Two-thirds of EU LFP batteries are imported from China. BYD's Super e-Platform delivers 400 km of range in 5 minutes of charging. In January 2025 Beijing threatened to ban LFP cathode technology exports to the US. Tariff circumvention. The EU imposed 17% to 35.3% duties on Chinese EVs in October 2024. BYD bypassed by exporting plug-in hybrids, not subject to EV tariffs: up 14x within one year. BYD is building production hubs in Hungary, Turkey, and Brazil. The October 2025 Busan Truce between Washington and Beijing kept 100% EV tariffs intact, confirming the EV sector as a separate strategic theater. The average European EV starts above €50,000. The average BYD in Europe ranges €30,000 to €45,000. Tesla's brand damage is short-term irreversible. Tariffs alone are being outmaneuvered by hybrid exports and local-for-local production. In my opinion, the EV transition is among the major industrial battles where China holds the supply chain backbone, the cost curve, and the technology leadership simultaneously. Europe's response will define whether technological sovereignty remains achievable in the strategic industries of the next decade.

Call it the Fiber Squeeze. Ukraine will produce 8 million FPV drones in 2026, the largest combat drone output of any country at war in history. The bottleneck has shifted from Ukrainian industrial capacity to global fiber-optic supply. The same Chinese factories that supply Meta, Microsoft, and Google AI data centers also supply Russian and Ukrainian drone operators. Ukrainian fiber-optic spool prices jumped more than eightfold in 2026. Combined Russian and Ukrainian consumption hit 50 to 60 million kilometers of fiber in 2025, roughly 10% of global output. Russia took itself partly offline in spring 2025. Two Ukrainian drone raids on the Saransk fiber-optic cable plant in April and May 2025 caused fires that halted production after flying ~1,400 kilometers through Russian airspace. The war and the AI buildout are now competing for the same critical input. Civilian infrastructure and military substrate have converged into a single supply chain that no Western government has a coherent policy framework to govern. This is dual-use geopolitics at scale. Whoever controls fiber-optic production controls both ChatGPT and Ukrainian battlefield resilience.

The real question is whether that holds the day a CENTCOM-type sighting happens over the Baltic or the Black Sea.
