People that like standard time are strange folks. Is there actually people that like it dark at 8:00 all summer? And 5:30 in the winter? Permanent daylights savings is the answer.

It’s imperative that we revert to STANDARD, not Daylight time, for two reasons, one of which you may have never considered. You know the first: solar noon is closest to 12 o’clock all year. That means an equal number of hours before and after noon each day. This also means earlier sunrises which are significantly better for establishing a healthy circadian rhythm. The second reason is that nearly ONE THIRD of US counties are in the wrong timezone. A significant swath of the country isn’t only an artificial hour ahead because of daylight time… but TWO HOURS ahead of true solar time. Year-round daylight time, especially without recalibrating time zones, would establish this error permanently, affecting millions of Americans. We should be letting the Sun dictate the day the way God made it. Arbitrary, artificial tampering would be worse for us all. Fix the time zones and affix standard time.

I agree this is a lifestyle preference issue at heart - people that enjoy late activities want more light at later hours - and I get that - it makes sense. It’s just not natural and goes against our natural rhythms. Then there’s the issue that darker mornings from permanent DST is a really safety issue and has been tried before and everyone hated it.
If we do permanent DST again - I think it’ll be changed back to the current two time system - which unfortunately on a near 50/50 issue like this seems the best compromise.

It’s not so much that we like it dark early, but more that we like earlier sunlight to sync with the natural circadian rhythm, and also time that is synced more naturally to the solar cycle, where noon occurs approximately when the sun is at its peak. Then on the tail end, having the sun set and our bodies circadian rhythm begin to naturally wind us down so we can sleep. 8pm is late, and perfect time to start winding down.
