On March 23, Gwinnett police responded to a report of a stolen French bulldog after the dog jumped out of its owner’s running vehicle while the owner briefly went inside a store. Security footage showed a group of individuals pick up the dog, place it in their vehicle, go into the store and then leave with the dog. During the investigation, detectives located a social media post where the individuals stated they had “stolen” the dog. Detectives identified the individuals and attempted to make contact with them at a family member’s house. Although they were not there, detectives were able to speak with 24-year-old Jada Miller and 45-year-old Tanithia Miller on the phone, who provided conflicting statements about what they did with the dog and denied knowing where the dog was. Jada initially stated they took the dog home and later gave it to someone who claimed it was theirs, while Tanithia stated she gave the dog to someone at Kroger and never took it home. When confronted about the conflicting statements, both refused to provide any information that could help locate the dog, and the conversation ended when they hung up on detectives. Before detectives left the residence, a family member stated that she would help get the dog back. Shortly after detectives left, the family member contacted detectives and informed them that they had the dog. Detectives returned to the family member’s house, retrieved the dog and returned it to its owner. Although the dog was running loose, when someone locates lost property, they still have a legal responsibility to attempt to locate the owner. Under Georgia law, a person commits the offense of theft of lost or mislaid property when he comes into control of property that he knows or learns to have been lost or mislaid and appropriates the property to his own use without first taking reasonable measures to restore the property to the owner.
