Mary Kay Letourneau was a sixth-grade teacher in Burien, Washington. In 1996, at age 34, she began raping her 12-year-old student, Vili Fualaau. She moved into the apartment complex near where Vili lived to stay close to him. She became pregnant by him (first daughter born May 1997) before sentencing. In 1997, she pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree rape of a child. The judge gave the rapist grace by sentencing her to 6 months in jail with MUCH of the sentence suspended plus a no-contact order. She did NOT have to register as a sex offender. After just 3 months into the order, she was caught with Fualaau, violating the court order. The suspension was revoked and she was ordered to serve a full 7½ year prison sentence. She gave birth to his second child, while he was still a minor. After her release, she THEN had to register as a sex offender, and the no-contact order was lifted once Fualaau was an adult. The two married in 2005. They were married for over a decade before legally separating and later divorcing. Letourneau died of cancer in 2020 at age 58. Before passing, she did several interviews. If the roles were reversed, there would’ve been zero grace. A female teacher raping a child and the system went soft at first. That’s dangerous. Predators don’t get a pass because of gender. There are more “Marys” than people want to admit, and I’m not going to stay quiet about it.
