I'm a former atheist and an ardent opponent of atheism. Y'all know that. But as Christians, I'm saying we need to acknowledge why some atheists aren't believers. Yes, some are arrogant and abusive and just seem to hate God and/or Christians for no discernible reason. But I've personally spoken with several, and read the stories of many more, who have been deeply hurt or disappointed by Christians, often the very people who should've been living the gospel in their lives and failed miserably. Others were never taught the core ideas of Christianity or were turned off by what looks like anti-intellectualism in the church. (That was me decades ago.) I get that these aren't logical reasons to reject God and Christianity. Ultimately, we'll all be responsible for the choices we make. But as followers of Jesus Christ, we shouldn't be dismissing these people because they haven't overcome the emotional scars or don't know what they don't know. Give some grace, as you were given grace. And do as Jesus does - meet people where they are, and try to lead them where you want them to be.

This is what Memorial Day is really about. It’s easy to treat it like a long weekend or the unofficial start of summer. A grave with a name on it. A wife still mourning. A family still carrying the cost. Freedom is not an abstract word.

The main reason we go to church is for God to serve us. +We go hungry ; he feeds us his Word. +We go dirtied by sin; he cleanses us by the blood of Christ. +We go thirsting for hope; he gives it to us in the gospel. +We go shrinking from shame; our Father tells us once more that we are his beloved children. Yes, we respond to God with prayer and praise. But the primary reason we go to church is for God to do what God does best: gift us, feed us, serve us in Christ.
