A young Winston Churchill as a cornet in the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars Cavalry (1895) After receiving his officer’s commission, Churchill would serve as a war correspondent in Cuba (1895), India (1897) and Sudan (1898). During his time in the Sudan he famously took part in the cavalry charge at the Battle of Omdurman with the 21st Lancers. In 1899, Churchill was ambushed and captured while working as a war correspondent during the Boer War. A month later, Churchill dramatically escaped the prison camp he was being held in and hid in a coal mine to avoid recapture. This turned Churchill into a household name and provided a desperately needed morale boost for Britain. The money made from his new fame and the free time from his resignation from the army, allowed Churchill to start a career in politics, which is what he’s best known for today. Churchill was also appointed honorary Colonel of the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars from 1941-1958. After his death in 1965, cornets from the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars stood vigil over Churchill’s coffin during his lying-in-state at Westminster Hall.

Britain closed Boston's port in hopes to isolate the city. Instead, it unified the colonies for the first time. In 1774, to punish Boston for the Tea Party, Parliament shut the harbor. No ships in or out. A trading city cut off from the sea, facing winter with no work or food. The point was to make an example of Boston and let the other colonies watch in silence. They did not stay silent. Connecticut drove flocks of sheep north. South Carolina sent rice. Villages that had never seen Boston took up collections of grain and flour and pork for families they would never meet. In North Carolina, a preacher told his neighbors: "The cause of Boston is the cause of us all." The law had only closed Boston's harbor, so the aid landed at nearby ports like Marblehead and came the rest of the way overland. Britain's plan had backfired spectacularly and brought the colonies one step closer to revolution.

Retired General Omar Bradley in Normandy during the 25th Anniversary of the DDay Landings - June 1969 He was 76 years old in these pictures, five years later Bradley also attended the 30th Anniversary of DDay at Normandy in 1974, participating in various parades.
