@briankturner101 Totally agree. For history, students do have to memorize basic dates, geography, and names before they can begin to contextualize that information.

Today we take a moment to honor the legacy of nearly 500,000 Marines who served during the Vietnam War. When Marines landed in Vietnam in 1965, their courage was tested in some of the most storied battles and operations in Marine Corps history—including Operation Starlite, Operation Hastings, Khe Sanh, Hue City, and Operation Dewey Canyon. Their service in the jungles and cities of Vietnam would help reshape the Marine Corps’ approach to warfighting and cement their contributions to the Corps’ history. --- Original Caption: A Marine from Company G, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, runs for cover as NVA soldiers open up with a .50-caliber machine gun during Operation Hastings. To say the least, I am over the moon about the opportunity to be working alongside the Weatherhead Center’s esteemed faculty. Given the center’s focus on international affairs, I feel it is the ideal place for me to turn my dissertation into a published book.

A professor tells me that over the last few years student writing—even in blue book exams which she has long administered—increasingly sounds like AI. She says this is especially true for ESL students. Increasingly *humans* are trained on AI writing, not the other way around.

My review of a new book by Frank Dikötter, "Red Dawn Over China: How Communism Conquered a Quarter of Humanity." The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) often presents its ascent to power as a historically inevitable and merit-based achievement. They claim that their leaders, characterized by benevolence, selflessness, and incorruptibility, were solely responsible for leading the Chinese people to victory over foreign invaders and ushering in peace and democracy. The party touts its egalitarian policies, such as the abolition of land ownership, as the foundation for its widespread support. However, Red Dawn presents a very different perspective on the CCP’s rise to power. It is a must read. helenraleigh.substack.com/p/reposting-re…
