@adriawildlife Yep, I was always interested in what they were foraging for. I still grab a bit in the spring while doing breeding bird surveys around Cheshunt pits

@BillyBloodworm I wondered if you'd spot that tweet! They were such a common sight, all Italians or Poles. Foraging (beyond blackberries) was so rare among the British at that time. Loads of stuff went begging.

I grew up on the northern edge of London. There were loads of Italians. The WW2 gen. They worked in the greenhouses. We'd laugh at them at this time of year. In their free time they used to go & gather "weeds" with a knife & a cloth bag. If you can't beat them, join 'em. 1/2

Successful trip to Donana national park with exceptional and repeated views of Iberian Lynx. Good supporting cast of Spanish Imperial Eagle and abundant waterbirds. Still very dry in most areas though.

Then back to mainland Greece to look at the options for restoring a lignite mine. The undisturbed site has Bears, Wolves and Wild Cats, as well as hundreds of nesting Bee-eaters.

A great pleasure to work with NCC Ltd Greece on the island of Folegandros, looking to create a wetland oasis for migrant birds at the Gundari resort. Hydrology and topography checked, all looking good. Plans drawn up and sent to owner. Eleonora’s Falcons always overhead.

Creating landscapes with more nature is a great and necessary idea - we try and do our bit But ‘rewilding’ as an ideology is struggling in practice… it quickly runs up against legal and ethical boundaries in human landscapes This is worth a read… bbc.co.uk/future/article…

What was your first birding 'scope? A trip down memory lane today after pulling this prized possession out of the cupboard - a Mirador 25x60 on a Cullmann tripod. My first-ever 'scope which transformed everything as a young teenage birder. A couple of weeks after I got it I can remember using it to watch the 1984 Dungeness Least Sandpiper with my late Uncle Richard, @Vaasetter and the late Brian Field. Used it today and it is still optically perfect! #ThrowbackThursday

Tiny Bird Tower... One of the highlights of this summer was building this project in northern Denmark – a small watchtower overlooking a wetland and a small lake. The tower was delivered to the site as a complete structure, set on a self-levelling platform. We call it the “treetop café” because this tiny tower features two benches with a small table between them, perfectly suited for 2–4 people. A panoramic view. No distractions. Just a cup of coffee, preferably in good company, and sweeping views of nature alive with birds, plants, and insects. This project was made for the Danish Fugleværnsfonden. #biotopearchitecture

Despite not seeing the mega alert for 3 hours I still managed an after work twitch to @RSPBRainham 15 years ago today for this White-tailed Plover. It wasn’t too far from where I’d ticked Sociable Plover 5 years previously. Caspian or Oriental next 🤞🏻😂

Why is no-one talking about what's going to happen to Eastern England? Starmer should be talking all this stuff constantly. We need our leaders to lead, not to follow the billionaire press.

@GarryBagnell The good news is that with all the carbon you’ve been burning more arctic ice will melt and we’ll all get a chance of one on the local patch

🦆 Waterfowl don’t feel at home in Doñana anymore ☹ New research by @ebdonana revealed that 9 out of 15 analysed waterfowl species have declined over the last 40 years in the Doñana National Park. This is due to the loss of flooded areas in the marshes of the park. Data shows that human activity and climate change have drastically altered this wetland, which is one of the most important wintering hot spots for migratory birds. Artificially flooded ecosystems, such as rice fields, or salt marshes cannot offset the negative effects of the degradation. When Doñana suffers, it is not just a regional issue but affects birds across Europe. This is a reminder that we need to preserve this wetland before the damage becomes irreversible. #DoñanaSeExtingue

If you’d told me 5 years ago that I’d soon be visiting a site of potentially 800 ha of rewilding with beavers, widespread natural regen and stage 0 restoration being planned in an Ultra Low Emissions Zone, I’d have said “dream on!” but yesterday it materialised at #Enfield Chase.

Sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica) seedling emerges from a carpet of Barbula unguiculata at Hilfield Reservoir, Herts. A disappearing species in Herts. Establishment conditions are open ground created by livestock poaching. Observing this allows us to see a missing vital element. 1/2
