Professor Bratt: I trust you will point out the error in the city councillor's proposal to have a city vote to secede from Alberta. The claim that “if Alberta can leave Canada, then Calgary or Edmonton can leave Alberta” is not correct. The Supreme Court of Canada’s secession decision dealt with provinces. It did not say municipalities have a right to secede. Provinces are constitutional actors. Municipalities are not. Calgary and Edmonton exist because Alberta law creates them. Their powers, boundaries, councils, duties and legal status all come from provincial legislation. That is why a city is not legally comparable to a province. A clear vote by Albertans on independence allows Alberta to become an independent country. A city council resolution would not turn Edmonton or Calgary into a separate province, country or constitutional actor. People can support or oppose Alberta independence. That is democracy. But we should debate the issue honestly. The “cities can leave too” argument is not law. It is fear dressed up as law.

@dubsndoo Can someone answer the questions: what does a successful reconciliation look like? How long will it take? How much will it cost? Will it ever be enough?

How long are you guys gonna carry a grudge? You do realize that Canadian taxpayers aren’t responsible for any of it right? Maybe check with the Pope; he’s filthy rich.

This is the equivalent of saying "if you leave me, you won't be able to see the kids" when a spouse is looking at a divorce. No. That's not how this works. If you are a Canadian, you stay a Canadian. Instead of giving reasons to remain, Federalist are now creating false fears.
Rise Of Alberta@RiseOfAlberta

Federalists claim Albertans would “lose their passport” after independence. Based on what law? Canada allows dual citizenship. Citizenship is not automatically cancelled by political boundary changes. Until they can cite the statute, it’s fearmongering, not fact.

Something is deeply shocking me, some people who call themselves “human rights activists” speak endlessly about Palestinian rights, yet won’t utter a single word about Hamas’s brutality against Palestinians. Not just silence, they actively cover for it. Spare us the hypocrisy.

@Martyupnorth The problem they have is they’re using fear. They have yet to offer concrete valid reasons to stay. Having said that, it will work. That’s why we have PM Carnage.

@Biltco5 It’s been leaking and failing since at least 1980 - the electrical system was actually outdated in 1983. No PM or Opposition leader has asked for funding directed toward it unfortunately

I want the Canadian roundel displayed with pride around the world. Sometimes Canadians really annoy me. I want the Prime Minister of Canada to have reliable internet access on the country’s official plane. I also want proper funding spent on 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence for our Prime Minister, including a dining room large enough for G7 leaders to meet there. These aren’t luxuries - they’re about basic competence and strong national optics. Canada should project pride and seriousness on the global stage instead of cutting corners on symbols that matter in order to pacify loud voices which should be dismissed

This is what Kinew excels at - he is not afraid to confront people to their face when he knows they are not telling the truth. Danielle Smith should be clearly embarassed to be called out in such a public way. Don't think Wab is going to get a Christmas card from her this year.

Love all the self loathing phoney liberals, can’t take someone being successful and speaking the truth. I think you all need to go create a colony in Gaza, regular Canadians have had it with your constant anti west bullshit. You guys can live there and focus on new land acknowledgments🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣

We could start moving $30 billion of our oil overseas every year. Carney must get out of the way and permit builders to build it and energy companies to fill it.

Mark Carney walked into the Economic Club of New York, & instead of grovelling like every other world leader who's come to kiss the ring, he stole the MAGA slogan straight off Trump's head & used it as a weapon. "Canada Strong will help make America great again." 1/2 🧵#cdnpoli
