Left: 15 years old visiting my dad in prison for the first time. He was arrested on my birthday. My first time ever in court or court cells was a few days later when they let me down to see him. Right: 28 years old on my last day of pupillage, now a FULLY QUALIFIED BARRISTER.

Feature in @BASW_UK magazine on our @HmpPreston episode on the links between being care experienced + the CJS. It's key that professional networks around the child are aware of this disproportionate representation and are fighting against it. Listen here Bit.ly/HMPPreston

Children in care have criminal records for taking food from the kitchen, in their care homes, after hours just because they were hungry. Believe it, it's still happening. Imagine your parents calling the police on you because you took food from the fridge? It wouldn't happen. But it does in some residential settings. Making care experience a protected characteristic will bring about change to our legal system and stop vulnerable young people in care from being prosecuted just for being in care.

@kirkkorner Think it was Robert Buckland who suggested streaming the audio into cells when there may be refusal to attend/disruptive behaviour if forced. Seems like a good workaround?

Judges will be handed the power to order criminals to attend their sentencing hearing. The government intends to have the power "enshrined in law". Prison guards will have the power to force prisoners to attend. A refusal will be met with an extra two years in prison.
