#Ethiopian bold doctor sent her kids away and helped beat one of the world's deadliest viruses When #Rwanda confirmed its first Marburg virus outbreak in September 2024, Ethiopian emergency physician Dr. Tsion Firew found herself at the center of one of the world’s deadliest health crises. Working in Kigali as chair of emergency medicine at Africa Health Sciences University, she watched colleagues fall ill within days and realized the magnitude of the threat. With Marburg’s fatality rate reaching up to 90%, the disease quickly transformed her daily medical duties into a life-or-death battle — both for her patients and for herself. In an act of courage and painful sacrifice, Tsion made the bold decision to send her two young children to Ethiopia, her home country, to live with her parents while she stayed behind to confront the outbreak. Despite the overwhelming pressure and personal risk, Tsion helped pioneer an innovative response strategy that made Rwanda’s containment effort one of the most successful in history. Working with the World Health Organization and Rwandan health authorities, she supported the early use of the antiviral drug remdesivir for exposed health workers and oversaw experimental antibody treatments that helped save lives — including that of a colleague once believed to be near death. By December 2024, the outbreak had ended with only 15 deaths among 66 patients, marking the lowest recorded Marburg fatality rate worldwide. Now, a year later, Tsion reflects on how the experience reshaped her understanding of medicine, leadership, and sacrifice. Read more: npr.org/sections/goats…

As Africans, we don't appreciate Ethiopians enough for what they've done to Africa. If it wasn't for @flyethiopian, flights would only be among African countries & their colonial masters. To fly from Lusaka to Kinshasa, you'd go to Paris or Brussels first, then return to Africa !

AfCFTA Secretariat Official
Congratulations to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on Gazetting Its AfCFTA Provisional Schedule of Tariff Concessions (PSTCs)! What does it mean to gazette or domesticate a trade commitment? It is an official announcement that enhances transparency, ensuring that businesses, organisations, and citizens are informed of new regulations coming into force. This marks a key step towards the full implementation of the AfCFTA Agreement. For traders, this provides clarity and certainty, confirming that Ethiopia will grant preferential tariff treatment to eligible goods upon importation, in line with its commitments under the AfCFTA Agreement. #AfCFTA #CreatingOneAfricanMarket

This is an important special report that gets to the crux of the issue for many countries in Africa: - Rapidly growing population - Weak growth performance This means 80% of the world’s poor will be in Africa by 2030 The report covers many of the big issues. I would add two 👇

Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries: “It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones. “There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion. “If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice! “Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.”
