Preserving bitcoin’s weirdness is almost as important as promoting its benefits.

@spiralbtc Or that Vitalik got the idea for the term "toxic Bitcoin maximalists" because his dad was a huge Toxic Avenger fan...

Please welcome SHRIMPS🦐 to the family of stateful PQ signatures: 2.5 KB hash-based sigs across multiple devices. SHRINCS🛋️ gave ~324-byte sigs but is single-device. SHRIMPS🦐 addresses multi-device; any device loaded from the same seed creates sigs 3x smaller than SLH-DSA

I wrote an article to pair with the official release of the PaymentCode dot io website. It is hosted on @mynymbox and has both clearnet and tor options for use. Thanks to all that helped, gave feedback and have signed the guestbook! I hope devs and users can make use of the site 🙏.

@hodlonaut reddit sucks. Its not a content thing. They just auto ban accounts without much karma or that are new and try to post. Stacker News won't ban you.

@secsovereign People can come to agreement about what words mean without any governance or governing body. People can come to agreement about how to change Bitcoin without any governance or governing body. Thinking we need to standardize governance is the problem.

@secsovereign No. What creates centralization and power in Bitcoin is people who think that it needs governance. Because it is easy to see whether your node is on the same chain as others, Bitcoin needs no such "heavy standardization" of what should and should not be changed.

Governance ≠ government. Governance is just the mechanism by which decisions get made and power gets exercised. Every system has it. The question is never whether governance exists. It's whether it's visible, accountable, and contestable. Eric is also making the governance argument himself. Competition between implementations and exit rights are governance mechanisms. He's describing the cure while denying the disease exists. Let's be concrete. In 2025, a developer was banned from Bitcoin Core's GitHub for raising a documented conflict of interest. A prominent contributor pushing OP_RETURN removal was a VC backer of Citrea, a for-profit project that directly benefits from the change. Raising that fact got you removed from the discussion. The change shipped anyway over broad, documented opposition from Dashjr, Mow, and dozens of others. That's not the absence of governance. That's informal governance that learned to call itself "the protocol" so nobody has to answer for it. The Knots surge past 25% of public nodes wasn't users opting out of governance. It was users exercising the exact governance mechanism Eric just endorsed, while the people who pushed that change face zero consequences for banning critics and running the process the way they ran it. To be clear, I'm not telling anyone what software to run. Run whatever you want. What I am saying is that Bitcoin is already being governed. Pretending otherwise doesn't make it stop. It just means the people doing it never have to answer for it. "Bitcoin isn't governable" protects the people who already govern it. Nothing more.
Eric Voskuil@evoskuil

I hate to have to break it to y’all, but “governance” is not how this works. And the attempts to make that work is how we got here. Bitcoin is not a company, not a democracy, not a consortium, and not governable.
