Ukraine will stop sending soldiers abroad for training and plans to conduct all military personnel training exclusively on Ukrainian territory. This decision is attributed to the fact that instructors from Western countries lack modern combat experience.

30-year mortgage rates are up around 0.5 pp since Feb. 27, the day before strikes on Iran, to 6.5%, according to Mortgage News Daily. That’s back to where they were before the Fed pivoted last August to restart rate cuts.

Yields on the two-year Treasury note are up 0.516 pp since Feb. 27, the day before strikes on Iran, to 3.893%. That’s the highest close since July. The gain over the last three weeks is the largest since May 2023 (the reversal of the SVB rally). The gain of 0.223 over the last three days is the largest since April 9, 2025, when Trump announced the suspension of the Liberation Day tariffs.

The ante for the Iran war has already risen to $200 billion. Once committed, the government will be throwing hundreds of billions more into the pot. The bigger threat is not Iran itself, but the debt and inflation that will result from financing a war with an uncertain outcome.

What if inflation this year is closer to 10% than 2%? How will the Fed react to a "surprise" surge in inflation? If the Fed does the right thing and raises the Fed funds rate by several hundred basis points and resumes QT, the result will be a financial crisis worse than 2008.
