It’s that time of year beekeepers find Mickey Mouse in their kit!! 🐭. This feeder was forgotten on site at the start of winter….a little mouse took advantage of it!!! #beekeeping #beekeeper #beekeepers

We’re grateful to the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Department for keeping Marshall safe. Several years ago, a deputy noticed our shop door had blown open late at night, secured it, and waited until we arrived to ensure everything was in order. Moments like that remind us how fortunate we are to live and work in this community. 💙🚓 #MarshallVA #CommunityFirst #ThankYouFauquierSheriff

Bees with blue stripes. This type of bee is called Amegilla and they are interesting not only for their coloring but also for their lifestyle 🐝🐝 Amegilla do not build hives, they live and reproduce in burrows dug in the ground 😊

I like to listen to audiobooks while taking long walks in the woods! Right now, I’m listening to Outward Mindset by The Arbinger Institute. I use Libby or Hoopla, which offer eBooks and audiobooks through my library card. I’ve also discovered that if I borrow an eBook and send it to my Kindle or the Kindle app, I can enable the accessibility feature to have it read to me. The voice is a little robotic, though!

These are Catasetum orchids, as bees probe inside they trigger this yellow sac of pollen called pollinia to be launched, attaching to the back of a bee with a sticky pad, watch here When they later visit female flowers, the pollinia fits for pollination

Linnaeus's flower clock is a fascinating and historical concept created by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century. In 1751, Linnaeus designed a flower clock as a way to show how different flowers bloom at specific times of the day, thus creating a living "clock" that could be used to tell time based on the opening and closing patterns of flowers. For example: •5:00 AM (early morning) – Crocus (known for opening at dawn) •9:00 AM – Poppy (which opens late morning) •12:00 PM (noon) – Lily (which blooms around noon) •3:00 PM – Rose (usually opens fully in the afternoon) •6:00 PM (evening) – Evening primrose (blooms in the evening) •9:00 PM (night) – Night-blooming cereus (which opens at night)

Still going around adding fondant to what’s left that hasn’t been fed yet. This particular site was hammered by the Hornets in autumn….hence only 35 nucs on site.
