Because overrunning a ball isn't an error. Never is UNLESS the fielder recovers in time to be in a position to make the play with ordinary effort. I'll take my years of experience on this topic, plus the fact that, you know, I make a living doing this, that I have this correct. Also, you spelled idiot wrong.

@ScoringChanges Nothing in this play was illegal. You are allowed to run the bases backwards if you are confused. You aren’t allowed to run the bases backwards to make a travesty of the game.

This play sort of broke the system a little, because it's illegal and the umpires screwed it up. In the end they left him on second and credited him with a caught stealing of second, but this was a complete mistake.

@ScoringChanges What exactly does your OS manual say about when you should assume an out in a rundown? There's at least some chance the runner could have slid under a tag at the plate, or dove back safely to third. Not a great chance, but it isn't zero.

ANALYSIS: Originally, this wasn't considered an assumed out, but since the runner at third is frozen, this is a rundown and you can assume this out, making the run unearned. Originally this was considered an escaped rundown.

If you all want to laugh, in some other game tonight apparently there was a force out on a nice play and the scorer (who knows me) DMed me and said that apparently he should score it a hit since I obviously no longer know the rules. Made my night.

@ScoringChanges @Marlins @CleGuardians So, even if the failed FC was a ground ball hit right to the 1B standing next to the bag, the scorer can't assume he would have stepped on first for the out because the situation doesn't fit either of those two criteria?

@ScoringChanges Let's say there was no interference (or any other error) on this play, and after multiple rundowns Happ slides under the tag and is safe at home while Hoerner ends up safe at third. Would that be two steals for each of them?

ANALYSIS: As I mentioned yesterday, there was some cleanup needed. The assists are added because Happ is considered an assumed out at third, and the run is unearned because of that, and even without that, the inning ended on the Shaw at bat, meaning the run would have never scored. What's not here is how the two runners advanced to second and third, so there should be an appeal by the @Cubs as Happ and Hoerner either should both have a steal, or Hoerner should have a picked off/caught stealing. What it can't be is what it is right now, because you must account for every base, and right now two are unaccounted for, but that was the decision of the official scorer. If I were scoring, this would be a double steal as it fits all the written rules as both runners advanced a base without the aid of an error, and to me it's similar to the 1st and 3rd play where R1 gets caught in a rundown on purpose and the defense opts to get R3 going home and both are safe.
