Not a change, but I've had a TON of folks asking if this is getting changed from June 10. This is a ball hit by Mookie Betts of the @Dodgers and it was ruled an error on Jake Mangum of the @Pirates. The only thing I can think of is that Mookie didn't appeal, because this is a base hit, it's always been a base hit, and it will continue to be a base hit. Except on this one play. There is no way a sliding attempt like this is an error. I know Mangum broke the wrong way, but that doesn't factor it ... it's the catch, the physical catch, and there is ZERO CHANCE this is ordinary effort. I know we talk changes here, but this non-change is the most confounding one for me since Aaron Judge's first career walk-off hit, which was the most obvious fielder's choice of all time, but because it was the last play of the season, it didn't get appealed or changed.

While Bryce Miller allowed just one run in five innings of work in a 6-2 loss, he allowed the run that gave Boston the lead for good, and that is who is always credited with the loss. This is one of the weird times when it feel brutally unfair, but there are times this works the other way as well.

@ScoringChanges @Pirates @Rockies Why did Bryce Miller get the loss for the mariners last night? I understand he allowed a lead that wouldn’t be relinquished but he gave up 1 run and the mariners scored 2, shouldn’t the loss go to Castillo who gave up the game winning run?

🚨SCORING RULE ALERT🚨 This was ruled a missed catch error on the first baseman Jonathan Aranda of @RaysBaseball, allowing Jacob Young of the @Nationals to reach, but this will be changed by @EliasSports and the MLB folks, as this is a rules issue with the OS Manual. The throw by Junior Caminero (who has been involved in many changes this year) is into the runner, and Young in trying to catch and tag the runner has the ball knocked out of his mitt. The OS Manual specifically addresses this play, which has been changed many times over the past few years. "...when a throw to put out the batter or a forced runner is into the runner and the receiver of the throw has the ball knocked out of his glove a split-second after the ball arrives, do not charge a missed-catch error." Since that is exactly what happens here, this play will be changed, most likely to a throwing error on Caminero. #NATITUDE #RaysUp

People forget that on the 1986 @Mets World Series winning team, Roger McDowell went 14-9 in relief with 22 saves. That is a TON of decisions and stats for a guy. That was rather incredible. For while it felt like anytime he pitched he was getting a win, a loss, or a save. baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcg…
Yeah, I Think So.@BMarekk10

@Mcbod93 @ScoringChanges @Pirates @Rockies There was a year Juan Rincon won 10 or 11 games for the Twins out of the bullpen. He lost a handful too. He pitched like 85 innings and made 80 appearances. A lot of decisions for a 1 inning bullpen guy.

You are considered brief and ineffective if you pitcher fewer than 1.0 innings (so 0.1 or 0.2) and allow two or more runs to score, inherited or otherwise, OR if you pitch exactly 1.0 innings, and allow four or more runs to score, inherited or otherwise. There is a caveat about runs being earned and not having the benefit of previous errors as well, but that's the crux of it.
Kevin Geary@kevingeary10

@ScoringChanges @Pirates @Rockies Does this rule become irrelevant if the pitcher completes a full inning of work?

🚨ODD SCORING ALERT🚨 Last night in the @Pirates at @Rockies game, we had a fun invoking of rul 9.17(c), giving the win to Colorado's Antonio Senzatela, even though he was in line for the save. Up 2-1 in the eighth, Jaden Hill entered with one out and a runner on second. He allowed a single to score that run, and then after a caught stealing to clear the bases, he hit Spencer Horwitz and allowed a run scoring triple before ending the inning trailing 3-2. The Rockies then took the lead 4-3, and to start the ninth, Senzatela entered for what he thought was the save. But...Rule 9.17(c) deems that Jaden Hill was considered brief and ineffective, because he pitched fewer than 1.0 innings (he went 0.2) and allowed two runs to score, inherited or otherwise (he allowed one run on his own, and one inherited runner). Since Senzetela allowed zero runs and was considered more effective, Senzetela got the win instead of a save. The B&I rule, 9.17(c), has been a point of emphasis since the 2022 season. @TheSportsFanOne Hit hard but he is there. I don't like the fielder's choice because the second baseman was so far away, I think he would have thrown the batter out at first.

@ScoringChanges Brandon Lowe top 9 last night - ruled a fielders choice and error on Tovar. The ball was smoked 105 off the bat . Thoughts on the ruling?

By rule, if a pitch hits the dirt, it is ALWAYS a wild pitch. Now, sometimes a scorer will determine that a ball hit the dirt but the catcher could have caught it before it hit the dirt, but that is very rare. Rule 9.13(a) says this: “The Official Scorer shall charge a pitcher with a wild pitch when a legally delivered ball touches the ground or home plate before reaching the catcher and is not handled by the catcher, thereby permitting a runner or runners to advance.” If it hits the dirt, it’s a wild pitch. Now, if it doesn’t hit the dirt, it can still be a wild pitch, but anything in the dirt is a wild pitch, by rule.
Ruben Amaro, Jr.@RAJr_20

@JamesComerPyle @sudsman61 Prob with these numbers. The official scorers have changed their criteria on everything. From ruled hits/errors to sacrifice bunts to passed balls/wild pitches. This data you can basically toss out the window. Data/stats have been so grossly skewed that it is impossible to compare

What folks are missing on this is you cannot take the poor read into this. You can only judge the error by the physical catch. Yes, it's a terribile read in that he broke backwards, but the error was giving for failure to hold on to a sliding catch running at full speed. This is SPECIFICALLY covered in the OS Manual. "While it may sometimes feel unfair to the pitcher, if a fielder misjudges a ball to the point that he is never able to get in position to make a play with ordinary effort, no error should be charged." That is EXACTLY what happened. Mangum misjudged the ball at the beginning and never recovered. This is a hit, and it's always been a hit. I was shocked in the moment it happened when it was ruled an error, and I'm MORE shocked it wasn't changed on appeal. It happens. I make mistakes too, but this one is very surprising to me. This has just never been an error, but in this lone instance, it is.
Gcharleston@Gcharlesto90561

@ScoringChanges @Dodgers @Pirates This should be an error 10 out of 10 times. It was only a sliding attempt because the fielder erred on his jump.

Correct. Had Volpe struck out, it would have been credited to Chisholm, which would have been the very definition of “adding insult to injury”
Jersey General@JerseyGeneral34

@ScoringChanges I know you know this, but because Volpe entered in the middle of an at bat and drew a walk, he gets credit for it even though the count was 2-2

@JerseyGeneral34 I remember the Rhoden thing because I was living in NY at the time and the papers always talked about how he should be used as a pinch hitter. And no clue on the 1993 thing, but it sounds like a Dusty Baker thing lol.

@ScoringChanges I would bet you are conflating Billy using Rhoden as an actual DH with what Earl (and Sparky) did pinch-hitting for their fake DH. Also, do you know which NL manager did the same thing by putting a pitcher in the lineup as his starting third baseman a few times in 1993?

It is an interesting point for “The Ohtani Rule”. When the DH rule was written in 1973, Ron Luciano was a part of the process with a few other umpires, and their thought process was “screw the manager”, which is why the DH is locked into a slot in the batting order. It’s also why if the DH moves into the field, or a position player moves from the field into the DH’a slot in the batting order, the DH is terminated. Because umpires wrote the rules and they felt the DH was a massive advantage for the hitting team. Billy Martin and Earl Waver used to list the previous game’s starting pitcher as the DH and then pinch hit for them pending the situation, so the rule was changed where the DH must hit once unless the pitcher changes. So the Ohtani Rule was the first change in the DH rule which helped the manager, not hindered.
Sugarfoot@geraldhanson122

@Big_Guy7 @ScoringChanges Respectfully, I could’ve thrown any pitcher or DH combo out there and it wouldn’t even be close to the talent Ohtani has almost on either side of the plate. Mind you I love Ohtani’s talent, but it literally is a cheat code on this Dodgers roster. I’m not crying, just saying

I definitely might be having a “Mandela Effect” from reading Luciano’s book. Weaver did it enough times (usually with Steve Stone, 12 times in 1980) to force a rule change. Fun fact, I was a kid and went to the Pine Tar resumption game ($2). Don Mattingly played second base. We had no clue of the controversy with the umpires and the piece of paper they were showing the Yankees manager (it was a signed affidavit saying Brett touched all the bases). I could have sworn I read Martin did it too, but I read that book over 40 years ago, so I could very well be wrong.

@ScoringChanges Martin played Guidry in centerfield twice for an inning each to help him reach a contract incentive and as a protest in the continuation of the Pine Tar Game but was never in the starting lineup as a DH. Billy also used Rick Rhoden as a DH once but let him bat twice (0-1 RBI SF)

@ScoringChanges Earl WEaver only did this a few dozen times in September/October 1980, while Billy Martin never did so at all

This is allowed because he isn’t pinch hitting. By rule, the DH bats in place of the pitcher, so it is perfectly legal to remove the DH and allow the pitcher to bat for himself, which is what this is. The Dodgers forfeited the DH once Ohtani entered the game to hit. This has been the rule for 50+ years.
Unbiased Mets Fan@TheMetsX

I’m sorry but this is absolutely ridiculous, how is this allowed? Shohei Ohtani is now pinch hitting in the 6th inning of a game he started on the mound while not being in the lineup
