These findings highlight the importance of context-dependent , individualised training prescription to target specific physiological adaptations while accounting for individual and programme-level variables.

Adaptations were also influenced by how training was prescribed. Key moderating factors included: • exercise modality • HIIT interval duration • work-to-rest structure • total training volume In other words, “HIIT” is not a single stimulus.

Further to this, we conducted moderator analysis to examine whether the effects of HIIT vs. MVICT on all outcomes were consistent based on training status, age, sex, interval type, interval training intensity, and exercise modality.

However, we found no clear differences between HIIT and MVICT for: • metabolic thresholds • exercise economy • peak anaerobic power • overall physical performance Ie. On a group level, both training approaches produced comparable adaptations.

How does high-intensity interval training (HIIT) compare with moderate-to-vigorous continuous training (MVICT)? Our new meta-analysis synthesises 115 RCTs (n = 3196) across populations from sedentary adults to elite athletes. DOI: bit.ly/4rJXGgt Key findings below 🧵

Across the literature, on a whole group level, HIIT produced greater improvements in VO₂max than MVICT. HIIT also produced larger improvements in: • maximal aerobic power/speed • mean anaerobic power

We examined how HIIT vs MVICT affects: • VO₂max / VO₂peak • maximal aerobic power or speed • mean and peak anaerobic power • first and second metabolic thresholds • exercise economy • physical performance

HIIT has become one of the most widely promoted training strategies in both health & sports performance. This study provides the most comprehensive synthesis to date examining how HIIT vs MVICT influences multiple indicators of cardiorespiratory fitness.
