@frasermatthew I would call it more globalisation. It’s the same in Germany: we would have Diplome and now it’s also BAs and Masters. Makes it easier for students to compete internationally. When I worked in Asia in the 90s nobody knew a “Diplom”..

The "Master" degree in France is another example of French infatuation with everything Anglo-American. When I was a university student in Paris, graduate degrees were DEA (I earned one) and DESS. Twenty-five years ago, the "Master" was created to emulate the Anglo system.
