Waiter: "Are you waiting for someone?" Me: "No." Waiter: "Right." He leaves. He returns with a more senior waiter. Senior Waiter: "Sir, I understand you'd like two ribeyes." Me: "Yes." Senior Waiter: "Together?" Me: "One after the other is fine." Senior Waiter: "And no sides." Me: "Correct." Senior Waiter: [the long pause of a man calculating whether the kitchen will refuse] Senior Waiter: "Of course, sir." They brought out the first ribeye with the energy of a hostage exchange. The second arrived twelve minutes later with no commentary at all. Acceptance, I think. They had moved through denial, bargaining, and arrived at the meat.
