@JChase_1028 @RevRayCistman That is a white liberal women’s take. Lots of stories about tons of money and infrastructure put into impoverished places and they either reject the offer (as it requires a type of work that isn’t culturally normalized), or they quickly revert back to old ways.

@RevRayCistman Maybe what people call racism is, at its core, often a prejudice against poverty. Do you think they don’t dream of sitting in a fancy restaurant, eating a steak, and living the same life as the wealthy?

@ShaughnCasey @jpodhoretz I read some fcking version that excused Troy’s guilt by claiming it was all fated when some god of chaos bitch crashed a wedding and put a golden apple up as a prize to the fairest goddess. Paris had to choose who and his reward was the most beautiful mortal woman (Helen).

@ShaughnCasey @jpodhoretz Paris - acting as an envoy of Troy disrespected Menelaus’ hospitality when as a guest agreed to take Helen (whether kidnapped or went willingly). Strike one. Troy refused to give her back over ten years. Strike two. That’s it. The ancient world didn’t play baseball.

I am a superfan of THE ODYSSEY, but there is a inconsistency in the twist about the Trojan Horse. Odysseus feels guilty because it violates the law about hospitality. But THEY'RE AT WAR. No one asked for or offered welcome. Troy stole Helen. The Achaeans went to get her back.

@atTheStoryGiver @Spinoza1229 Ancient Greece wasn’t as sex fluid a modernity makes it out to be. The 300 elite theban gay lover warriors? BS. Alexander the Great being Bi? No evidence, likely BS. Revionist history. Etc.

@ryangaur Nolan’s Odysseus destroyed the trade routes (as his crew were in fact the Sea People) which the Cyclops depended on. Like how Odysseus hollowed out the Cyclops eye, Nolan was using metaphor to describe corporate raiders who strip assets during private equity buyouts. 💩

@BobbyOnlyOne Well, their error was in hanging around getting drunk. Odysseus the trickster knew better. I'm pondering my remake in 10 years with Chris Pratt as Odysseus. My guess is that the women were freed when local reinforcements arrive and thrash them (70 dead or captured- ugh!)

@CoreyAtad Gonna see the movie tomorrow. But still, and am not against her translation at all, but is it a perfect translation? Cause she demands that from Nolan in a whole another field of art, apparently.

@ReReadingWolfe I always wondered what the crew did with the women on those small boats. Use them for a week then kill them? Sell them to someone else nearby?

@BobbyOnlyOne Um... just to clarify. In Book 9, Odysseus' crew stops at Ismarus to engage in old-fashioned piracy. They sack the city, kill the men, pillage the treasure, and divide the women among the crew. These are the morals that inspire you?

@ReReadingWolfe It would depend on what culture the people of the city belonged to. Didn’t Odysseus’ crew suffer relentlessly for their behavior later on? lol. One of the many lessons we learn from our flawed heroes.

@ReReadingWolfe Also, if there was a halfway decent and halfway faithful modern version of the odyssey there would be nearly no controversy. Make whatever reimagining they want, at least I have an OG version to show my kids.

@ReReadingWolfe I’m not even greek and I find it offensive. I grew up embodying a lot of the lessons taught from the story. I find it hypocritical when Christian scholars/podcasters (whom I otherwise respect) delight in the reimagining in this Odyssey movie

@AaronIrber There’s a trend where christians are ok whitewashing the Odyssey with christian themes. I wonder if the same people would be irked if the Biblical stories of Jesus were drastically altered to fit a different religion/philosophy so that the main themes aren’t recognizable?

I remember taking my daughter to a high school daddy-daughter dance, and while I was holding our place in like for photos, another dad engaged me. He pointed out his daughter, talking to her friends. "That's my girl, over there. Which one's yours?" "Oh. No," I said, smiling, "I came here stag." The look on that guy's face. I still LOL over it. I'm laughing right now...

@Helena920121 @JoniWagner However, the secretive nature of the way Canada handles “justice” incentivizes corruption. Assuming anyone in the legal system is going to do what’s right is a naive position (not you) far too many Canadians have for 2026. Florida’s transparency seems to be working.

Seinfeld’s Pez Dispenser 🇨🇦 🇺🇸
Over a month after five children were killed in that Mapleton crash, the families still have no answers. So they had to hire a law firm to force the truth out of the system. Police still won’t name the ‘Brampton SUV driver’. Still no photo. Still no explanation for why he may have blown through that stop sign. Media won’t press them. If this had been some white guy from a farm down the road, we’d have his full name, mugshot, and a full history. Instead we get ‘42 year old man from Brampton’ and a shrug. They’re hiding something. And every single one of us knows exactly what it is.

That change is Calypso's island. I imagined it as a lush Mediterranean island. Not a windswept atoll. Perhaps I am misremembering the description in Homer. (A distinct possibility.) But I didn't like that one artistic change. /fin

I just got home from seeing The Odyssey. I loved it. Sure I can quibble about some artistic choices Nolan made. But when you consider he uses practical special effects, many of those changes make a lot of sense. One changes does stick in my craw. 1/2

@CarlosCMTF @Eve_Barlow It’s been a while since I watched that movie but I totally got the same vibes. The traumatized Odysseus wasn’t working for me. Maybe if I already had an awesome and faithful modern version.

@NYKnicks124 @Eve_Barlow Nolan shows Clytemnestra has just cause killing her husband bc she sacrificed their daughter (doesn’t mention the uncle seducing her into it). Helen has a bad attitude one night but wouldn’t you if your husband wrecked your face and took you away from riding Orlando Bloom? lol

@NYKnicks124 @Eve_Barlow Did Nolan make any female a bad person? Circe had a virtuous rationale for her extreme behavior. Calypso wasn’t imprisoning Odysseus, she was trying to get him home and off the drugs. Penelope women-splains to her son. Mia Goth gets shut in with the suitors. That’s it.
