Amazing what one can get done when no one’s around. UO classes start Monday - bring it on, baby!

RB2 update - for a dog with 12 staples in his neck, our first short around-the-block walk was a great success. He stopped, sniffed, and peed like any normal male dog. So very pleased/amazed/blessed by his rapid recovery some six days after such invasive surgery!!! 🙏

Devastated by RB2's diagnosis of intervertebral disk disease, similar to a pinched nerve in humans. He's on pain medication & anti-inflammatory steroids. For the next ~4 weeks, physical activities are strictly prohibited, necessitating close monitoring by yours truly. Very sad!☹️

My favourite thing about working with cyclophanes is the diversity of structural representations on supplier websites. You can really tell who makes extensive use of the “clean up structure” chemdraw function (and who forgot about “send to back”)

@awhspeed @ndchiappini The isomer shown is the pseudo-para isomer, which is indeed a chiral by virtue of an inversion point. Resolution of the acid or aldehyde are common ways to obtain enantiomerically pure material. Check out Stefan Braese’s recent work.

IIRC, when we made this imine, the two benzylic protons show up at different chemical shifts (ie are inequivalent). Explain that!

@awhspeed I prefer the first way. I have never been a fan of reading the big points in the abstract and then being told them again at the end of the introduction. The repetition seems like a waste of time. Having a story doesn’t necessarily imply that it is long-winded. My two bits.

Would you rather read a paper that collects a bunch of small observations, and builds up to gradually show the big picture, or a paper that presents the big picture first, then breaks down all the component parts delineating their importance? (1/n)

@awhspeed It’s the only lab they could get into without wearing any PPE.

I feel there is something ironic about a politician posting a staged photo of a lab that contains no equipment or any evidence of any work being done on the benches. Almost like they are not qualified to weigh in on research-related things?

Trudeau's slow and incompetent pandemic response continues to hold everyone back. Being ready to produce vaccines domestically will secure our country's future. nationalpost.com/news/canada/ca…

I lost a chemistry "hero" last night. Reg Mitchell was a way too big personality and a great chemist. He gave this young punk his first speaking slot at a chemistry conference back in 1997. It was so great to hang out with him one last time on Zoom this past Tuesday - RIP RHM. 😢
