What a tremendous loss for the novel aromatics/hydrocarbon community. Henning welcomed me at ISNA-8 in Braunschweig in 1995 like a full-fledged colleague even though I was a young no-name assistant professor. That was the kind of person he was. RIP my friend – you'll be missed!😢

🌻Henning Hopf passed away on March 12 only three months after his 85th birthday x.com/livesinchem/st… A great organic chemist who had deeply cared about our community—a true “mensch”—has left us. Lives in Chemistry l-i-c.org lost a most insightful Advisory Board member who had enormously contributed to this endeavor from the beginning.

In my happy place—garden 2026 is in the ground! While it's only the beginning of March, winter has skipped Oregon this year. I've planted cool weather veggies–arugula, mizuna, lettuce, mixed greens, onions, bok choy, spinach, maché and garlic. Tomato starts are in my windowsill!

At long last—a GREAT effort by Megan & Nolan finally out in JACS after a 2+ year gestation. We found quadruply hydrogen-bonded DADA azaphosphinine homodimers are preferred over the theoretically more stable DDAA dimers with STRONG dimerization constants. pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.10…

Not a bad view wine tasting @brookswinery this afternoon with three junior colleagues. Excellent seafood today - oysters on the half shell, scallop ceviche, crab and shrimp cakes, and miso marinated black cod. Find the 4 mountains - St. Helens, Adams, Hood and Jefferson!

This should be an AWESOME meeting as Liangbing and his team will not disappoint! Also, I am honored to be chosen as one of the speakers. This will be my 15th(!) consecutive ISNA to attend since 1992! 🤓😮😍

Forgive me ⁦@nytcooking⁩ as I bastardized Mellisa Clark’s garlicky chicken recipe by adding the mushrooms and roasted peppers from Yewande Komolafe’s spicy chicken thigh recipe. The mashup was crazy good! Not a bite was left and RB2 licked the plate clean! #chemistswhocook

@annegglenn Nope, we've gotten to 33-34 F in Eugene proper a few nights, but nothing below 32 yet. I lightly squeezed each tomato and they are perfectly OK with no soft spots. Arugula and a few salad veggies are still going strong, but that is no surprise since they like cooler weather.

@UOHaleyLab Wow - I definitely had my plants freeze up back in late October in the dirty south (NC). Can't believe y'all haven't had a hard freeze yet!

This is so VERY wrong, picking cherry tomatoes on January 10 in Eugene, OR. The plants should have been blasted by a hard freeze some 2+ months ago but that freeze has yet to occur. Anyway I yanked the plants this afternoon and gathered this intact fruit 🤯 Global warming indeed!

@icelandcricket Also, we worked out how to eat nearly everything that a sheep has to offer. Singed sheep heads & legs, rams testicles (pickled in whey), liver and blood puddings stuffed in a sheep stomach included. But seriously, do try out a steak if you visit. Signed, ex-sheep farmer.

This evening, for no reason at all, we turn the spotlight on the Icelandic sheep. There are roughly 400,000 of them during the summer, more than our human population. They also have better designed houses than many of us.

First time re-reading Deception Point and Angels & Demons by @AuthorDanBrown in at least 15-18 years. The technology predictions in those books (nuclear, solar, commercialization of space) some 20+ years ago could not have been anymore spot on prescient!
