@Schoolbookclubs It was a bit difficult because I really wanted to write it with the language as it was used at the time. I feel that’s part of history and even if some terms are uncomfortable they are authentic and were part of my own and many others lived experience. #secondarybookchat

@AnyakwoDiana Changing the subject a bit - you write in your author note about how some of the language is of its time - how hard was it to navigate changes in terminology and attitudes? #SecondaryBookChat

@Schoolbookclubs Definitely Lily! I liked her curiosity about everything around her and the way she studied everyone in her world so closely. I liked that she was flawed and clumsy and she often got things wrong for example with making friends as a teenager… #secondarybookchat

@BookTalkCIC @Schoolbookclubs I would say it’s partly autobiographical but some events are twisted, exaggerated or just made up to show the various themes and ideas I wanted to explore. #secondarybookchat

@BookTalkCIC @Schoolbookclubs Yes when I was young - about 8 or 9 I came to Manchester to stay with relatives for about 18 months in the 1980s. Then I went back to Nigeria and then I came back to Manchester again around when I was about 15 in 1991 #secondarybookchat

@Schoolbookclubs The inspiration was my childhood in Nigeria in the 1980s. I had a nostalgia for that time #secondarybookchat
