Earlier today I was up in Shandon Park, one of the most talked-about streets whenever Irish language signage makes the news. I knocked on around 35–40 doors out of 140 odd and, unlike some other streets I’ve surveyed, this one was much more diverse. There was a few in favour of, a few against, but there was more “not sure” responses than anywhere else I’ve been so far. But what stood out most was the reason many residents gave. A lot of people told me they don’t actually have a strong issue with the Irish language itself. They don’t mind it being on the sign and many said they simply appreciate and respect the language as many are from nationalist background they openly told me. Their concern was that the street keeps being dragged into headlines because signs are vandalised, spray painted or damaged, often by people they say are not even from their own community. Pointing the finger to surrounding estates. Many said they moved to the area to get away from sectarianism and constant political symbolism, and they feel frustrated that their street is now being used as a symbol in a wider political argument. That’s why I’m doing this street by street. If a community supports the signs, I’ll say it. If they don’t, I’ll say that too. The point is to hear what residents actually think, not what low-response council surveys suggest. Call me anything you want but biased won’t be one of them. I’m not doing this to force it upon communities. It’s for genuine opinion. I’ll be finishing the Shandon Park survey over the next few days (biggest street so far), and up to now it’s clear this issue is more nuanced than the headlines make it out to be.

Best scenario for Hearts next season is getting to the Champions League Playoff Round dropping into the Europa. Picking up £10-15m and then getting the basis needed to consistently challenge for titles. They’ll face Sturm Graz or Fenerbahce in the Champions League QR2 - win that and they’ll secure Europa League football
