Earlier on the expedition we found the most beautiful flower, and here, my friends, is the biggest: Rafflesia arnoldi seen in full bloom today in the Sumatran jungle. This is the largest flower on earth and one of the greatest wonders of the natural world.

A life-changing encounter in Sumatra: Rafflesia hasseltii grows in just a few remote, tiger-patrolled rainforests, accessible only under permit and seen by few. We trekked day and night to find it, and look what happened when we did:

@timutteridge OOT, there two good databases for cataloguing plant species and their taxonomical information ie POWO and WFO. It is frequently asked which one as botanical managers should refer to when they look for the current accepted names.

“A large number of the world’s botanical specialists are heading for retirement, and new generations are not coming through in sufficient numbers,” Schoenenberger said. “Meanwhile, as biodiversity collapses, their expertise is more urgently needed than ever.”

It’s thought the house has a 15th century core with the upper floor added towards the end of the 16th century - once part of a much larger property:

Monocots can be quite confusing, but the students persevered! Great to use #herbariumspecimens to consolidate the characters of the familles, it makes such a difference! @KewScience

Aujourd'hui est le jour des #monocotyledones. Ce ne sont pas des familles faciles à reconnaître mais elles sont très importantes! Beaucoup de concentration dans la salle! @CharlotteCouch1 @UKBCFs @KewAfrica @anaritagsimoes @mobotgarden
