We must see in-car FM radio protected by the EU's digital Networks Act. I am calling for this in order to protect our culture, access to impartial journalism, and societal resilience. Irish radio is some of the best on the world, and is an important part of our social fabric. Many of us get our news from it, and in a time of algorithms and polarisation, the unbiased and thorough journalism is key to our democracy. However FM radio also plays a major role in our societal resilience in the case of Internet outages. During storms, blackouts, or hybrid attacks, people can rely on their car radio to receive important updates about vital services. The EU Digital Networks Act must recognise the importance of in-car radio and ensure that every car driven in Europe contains one, so that we can stay connected and safe.
