@EveraeGames @Cthulhu_Coffee DnD is my generic term for any TTRPG, and to me, DnD is just about making a story with some rules to bound the outcomes. In this way, DnD is never dying. It does stink that modern stories and settings feel so generic and cookie-cutter.

@AvonandsomerRob @TWrodbrochen I mean, you could rip CDs and use FLAC (or ALAC I think is Apple’s?) or 320kbps MP3 for great quality for a few albums or rip 128kbps MP3s and have hundreds of songs. HDDs and large flash storage are just more versatile vs. optical media.

@TWrodbrochen Yeah pretty much. Although the sound quality was rubbish compared to Minidisc. I had an unbranded mp3 player connected to Napster To Go. Average sound quality but maximum convenience.

Sony Minidisc was peak Hi-Fi. It sounded as good as CD, without the drawback of being easily-scratched. It didn't skip as a Walkman, & you could record on your home Minidisc separate, easier than cassette tape. It was also a perfect format for car audio systems. Why did it fail?

@MMDVG1 Chris really needs a new spotlight game, his appearances in RE7 and 8 were okay with him as a sort of spec ops commander but his character has taken a big hit compared to Leon.

@BozoCyborg @Jack_Frodo Exactly right and that's the point. All money is collective agreement. The difference is Bitcoin's supply can't be changed by a government or central bank. The agreement is the same. The rules enforcing the scarcity are different.

@zbogus77 Wooow, this list is a goldmine. Crazy to see some of these series coming in so high when they’re ’cult classics’ now. Reminds me of old sites like SFFJazz (still around!) that had such great lists for finding great SF and fantasy recs.

@scottastevenson I think this lowers barrier of entry and that’s going to be great for getting started but I’m still not convinced it’ll make a huge impact on the top 1% of games that are truly great. Sturgeon’s law still applies to AI from what I’ve seen. Still cool!

@Jack_Frodo 21 million hard cap, predictable issuance schedule, last coin mined in 2140. The scarcity isn't a feature they added it's baked into the protocol and can't be changed without the entire network agreeing. That's what makes it different from every other scarce asset in history

@AeresChronicles Dunsany is great and we know Tolkien was familiar with him. But there’s no doubt that Tolkien is the father of modern fantasy. There’s a direct line from him through the biggest fantasy that came after. Howard was a wild man who influenced a different but still important set.

In a world that’s constantly becoming more polluted with AI slop, it only makes me appreciate videos like this one of Drew Struzan creating the poster for The Phantom Menace even more. So compelling to watch. Every little detail is both perfectly and meticulously captured through real, human artistry. Drew’s artwork still remains so inspiring today, and that goes well beyond his work for the Star Wars films. He was nothing short of a legend, and AI could never generate the talent on display here.

@KevinLamb74 I blame the prevailing style and influences. Caldwell and the other TSR guys came out of a rich vein of adventure illustration that drew a line from Pyle through Frazetta and comic books. Art since 4E seems more influenced by WoW and ‘soft’ action.

I don't care if it's "unfair" to compare new D&D art to Clyde Caldwell. WOTC is a BILLION dollar company, they can afford the best illustrators in the world, yet the art on their game products is so consistently bad that something "pretty good" is instantly celebrated. TSR set the standard, WOTC is not meeting it, and until they do I will have absolutely no problem reminding people of that fact.

WOTC's new 5.5E Ravenloft is technically sound but...boring. Notice how everything just blends together; the furniture, the bodies, the ghost...leaving just a guy holding a glass. And then there's Clyde Caldwell's masterpiece where everything is equally evocative; the castle, the moon, the mist, even while your eye is instantly drawn to the ravishing girl and Strahd's anguish over losing her. #FantasyArt
