We all knew this was coming… but today I heard about it actually happening. A seed stage company backed by a well known VC openly admitted (in a board deck) that their strategy is to get access to a large incumbent’s software from a customer, clone the entire thing using Claude Code, and offer it at 90% less. Not “build something better.” Just copy it and offer it for less. The VC endorsed this as the GTM strategy. And even wrote back in writing that it was a good idea. Using a customer’s licensed access to reverse engineer a product and clone it is ethically bankrupt. I don’t know how else to put it. It likely violates terms of service. It may violate trade secret law as well (but I’m certainly not a lawyer). And a reputable VC putting this in writing in a board deck is genuinely insane. But it’s going to happen anyway. Everywhere… all the time. I don’t know where this ends, but we all knew this was coming and now it’s here.

I’ve been asked before how I define the American aesthetic and after all this time, I still don’t have a comprehensive answer. One place my mind wanders first is 19th century lithographs like these. The symbols, the typefaces, the populist idealism mixed with grand Victorian ornamentation, the structurally earnest maximalism, the Founders as quasi-deities. The format may not have been unique to Americans but the content certainly was. The self-mythologizing, the willingness to spell out “Honesty, Industry, Patriotism” in big letters with zero irony whatsoever. Feels to me like a distinctly bold American stripe of character that shows up consistently in cultural expression through the years. Our bold confidence may be easy to mock, but it lead us to Manifest Destiny and the stars, and thus cannot be ignored.

My kid is a rising senior. We’re looking at cars for her. She asked to look at the new Broncos… 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 $35000 & up. I decided to look at a RAV4 thinking I could find something less than $20000. They’re $30000 plus. I guess entry level vehicles are a thing of the past.

@BowTiedKong Pro tip: add a propane generator to your water system. When power goes out, using flashlights or fireplace for heat is no big deal. But having no water to flush toilets causes problems fast.
