I think one point that must be stated clearly is that Palestinian writers and journalists have spoken eloquently and courageously for decades about the israeli occupation, its war crimes, and the shameful complicity of writers and journalists who chose silence or even defended the slaughter of civilians. Inviting outside witnesses to expose these atrocities is important. In the cases of Gaza, constantly centering outsider voices to explain Palestinian suffering, while marginalizing the people who have lived under occupation their entire lives and survived years of israeli terror, is itself dehumanizing. No one is dismissing the value of outside voices or witnesses, and all respect to those who spoke out about what they saw or what others entrusted them with. But Palestinians, especially those from Gaza, are not voiceless subjects waiting to be translated, interpreted, or narrated by others. Definitely, the experiences of outsiders ( doctors, journalists, aid workers, and others) are an important part of the story. And by “outsiders,” I do not mean people detached from the local population or indifferent to Palestinian suffering. On the contrary, many of them shared deeply traumatic experiences with Palestinians, witnessed horrors firsthand, and lived under the constant threat of being killed in israeli air strikes themselves. But generally, voices from Gaza have too often been confined to the role of victims whose pain is packaged into stories told by outsiders, instead of being recognized as voices with their own authority, intellect, political consciousness, and lived truth. Are we not trustworthy enough to tell our own stories? Are we merely inanimate objects in a museum, observed in silence while visitors write about us in their diaries? If a Palestinian were a stone, that stone would have shattered itself into shards and written a poem across the seashore. It is long past time for survivors and victims themselves to speak directly, not through intermediaries, not as supporting characters in someone else’s moral awakening, but as people fully capable of telling the world exactly what has been done to them.
