It only becomes dangerous when it enters the skin through cuts or pores. When the infection becomes deep and severe, it is called sycosis barbae. At this stage, the follicles are badly damaged. Even the hair might fall out permanently in those areas. Treatment becomes longer and more difficult. This is why early treatment is necessary. When the infection is mild, it safe to start with topical options like: 1. Mupirocin ointment 2. Fusidic acid cream 3. Clindamycin topical gel 4. Benzoyl peroxide wash 5. Chlorhexidine wash If it spreads, becomes painful or forms pus-filled lesions, oral antibiotics is the best alternative for you. To name a few: 1. Cephalexin 2. Doxycycline 3. Trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole 4. Amoxicillin-clavulanate These kill the bacteria in the system, not just on your skin. Some staph bacteria are very stubborn to antibiotics. At this point, doctors need to test the pus to identify the bacteria. If it’s MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus), use: 1. TMP-SMX 2. Linezolid These are not casual drugs and must be prescribed by a doctor. One of the most important treatments is stopping shaving for several weeks and avoid picking or squeezing bumps.
