Of all the learning methods, lecture is the least effective (5% retention) of them all. If this is the case why do we still do so much of it in the church?

@JeffVanderstelt @HeathClarkGA This is so clear in scripture and yet many miss it. "Preaching" was typically done outside the gathering to unbelievers. In Acts 20, Luke uses language like "conversed," and "talked," when referencing Paul's speech. It was interactive and people engaged.

@BrandonGaster @JW_Lumley We are presently "independent," brother, if by that you mean not a part of a formal network. But we regularly partner with other churches in furthering Christ's mission.

Our brother @cuatronelson is correct. The SBC is too far gone. We can do far more by moving on and building something new, than we can trying to put lipstick on this dying pig.* *I pray I'm wrong, and those trying to save the SBC are successful. Just don't see it happening.

How The SBC Got Played An unlicensed investigation, a lawyer editing a report about her own client, and $13 million in tithes later, the largest conservative Protestant denomination in America learned what happens when men fear the mob more than they fear God. Special thanks to @megbasham and @RodDMartin for their contribution to this project.🫡

@BrandonGaster @JW_Lumley Brother, let me offer a gentle rebuke: You're thinking in terms of chariots and horses. I don't mean to say God hasn't used and can't use the SBC. But, no, the SBC is not necessary to the mission of Christ advancing.

@JW_Lumley @cuatronelson How about this angle? Those organizations were lost and are still leading people astray. The SBC was won and is still by and large leading people to the real faith. If we abandon the SBC now, it will lead more people astray than another Baptist organization will win over.

@BrandonGaster @cuatronelson The SBC is my heritage as well, but God can raise up rocks, He doesn't need the SBC it can go the way of the PCUSA and Methodists.

@cuatronelson @JW_Lumley I’ve personally seen it improve. We must continue. If the SBC permanently falls to the progressives, it’s not going to go well for Christianity in the US. The SBC is my heritage. I don’t think it’s good to give up heritage.

@BrandonGaster @cuatronelson But the question is how much more could we do in the time it will take to turn this around if we just moved on and started something else?

@JW_Lumley @cuatronelson I think we’re just at the beginning of the turn. There have been wins. I’ve seen Progressive churches are remove themselves and many moderates are naturally becoming more conservative with felt pressure. Still, most congregations are just beginning to learn of the frustrations.

@BrandonGaster @cuatronelson Brother, we were never this far behind in the 70's and 80's, we tried to turn things around with Mike Stone. We tried to turn things around with the Law Amendment. It didn't work.

@jarsofKlay I’ve recently done a deep dive into CP. Miscommunicating it as missionary missions money has been underselling the wider power of our giving. Just like “worship” is more than singing, “missions” is more than missionary work. CP funds more missions than just missionaries.

People can bring up trust and other things about why this happened. But as a pastor of a small church who's about to lead a newly formed mission committee to consider our mission dollars, trust has nothing to do with the equation. The equation is simple: 52.5% of CP dollars in TN goes to TBC. Of the 47.5% that goes to the national CP. Roughly 50% of that goes to the IMB. For my church that means $80 a month gets to the mission field of the $336 we give to the CP. The CP has been sold as missions to the average Southern Baptist. I would assume most Southern Baptist churches aren't busting at the seams with money. I would assume the majority are struggling and they want every dollar, every cent, to go to winning people to Christ. The question no Southern Baptist seems to be willing to talk about is: "Is the Cooperative Program really the best way to win people to Christ?" And that question can only be answered by each local church. Not by the people dependent on CP.
Willy Rice@WillyRice

Total CP gifts from SBC Churches: 2007-2008. $548,205,099 2023-2024. $446,641,957 A drop of over 100 million in 16 years. Nashville, we have a problem.

Just imagine how much more American this nation would have been if these people could have saved us from letting Bob Hope in…how much stronger if we had barred Albert Einstein, etc.

If you don't want anyone to ever hear your bad take, 3/4 of the way into a @CTmagazine podcast is one of the best places in the world to hide it. Unlucky for him we have enthusiastic and possibly masochistic staff who will suffer for the Gospel. @jamestalarico: "I think Christianity and other religions of love point to the same truth." @MikeCosper: "I'm more encouraged by Talarico's expression of Christianity than by what we've seen in the MAGA world."
