'Let's just reconstitute this before frankly, you really embarrass yourself.' @CamillaTominey clashes with Labour MP Tom Hayes who attempts to derail their interview by bringing up a story about Reform UK's Richard Tice, instead of responding to questions on Sir Keir Starmer.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal today that Keir Starmer's team received a briefing from security sources in 2023 about Peter Mandelson that included: * The revelation his friendship with Epstein dated back to 2006 * The pair were being monitored by Russian intelligence, who viewed their relationship as "close" * Soviet intelligence began targeting Mandelson as far back as the late 1980's * British and EU intelligence officials were so concerned about his business links with Putin ally Oleg Deripaska they advised him to cut off links. Including ending his use of Deripaska's private jet

@BethRigby He’s lied to everyone about this. The fact he may of may not have lied to the house is largely irrelevant at this point. Doesn’t lying to the public and being completely incompetent matter!?

ANALYSIS: So many questions PM near apoplectic on Friday as he insisted he was not told Peter Mandelson's security vetting had failed.  He insisted, repeatedly, that neither he nor other ministers had been informed about the vetting process and said he would present the full facts to parliament on Monday amid mounting calls for him to resign.  Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the opposition, has accused the PM of lying to save his job.  The stage is then set for an almighty clash - when the prime minister comes to parliament to persuade doubting MPs that he really was kept in the dark and he did not mislead parliament - as his opponents look to finish him off. Key to Starmer's defence on Monday will behe wasn't made aware of the details of Mandelson's vetting.  The central claim from No 10, repeated by the PM's chief secretary Darren Jones this morning, is that Starmer was only made aware on Tuesday night that Lord Mandelson had been granted security clearance against the recommendation of UK security vetting.  Foreign Office has Olly Robbins has been sacked over, as No 10 lays blame at that department's door. I was told the PM had been asking Whitehall questions about vetting for months, given he was being asked to give statements to parliament and this information was not shared. What this suggests is the Foreign Office withheld this information from the PM, which I find simply astonishing and shocking.  Overnight, I've spoken to a couple of former senior civil servants who have told me they find it impossible to believe Robbins would not have flagged this information to the PM and taken the decision to override vetting without consulting or informing any minister.  One former senior mandarin, casting around for a possible explanation, told me "failing" security vetting comes in different grades: "If it's complicated vetting, and the subject lives overseas, it might be that security services can't give a bright green light, but they can come and do the job but can't see top level papers, so the system can bend a bit." But this figure was equally clear that if Lord Mandelson failed vetting, then the explanation from government - that neither the PM nor his advisers, or it emerges the foreign secretary, were told - "makes no sense".  “The very first thing a permanent secretary would do is share that with their political masters," said a former civil servant.  Another told me last night as Robbins was sacked that it was "awful treatment of a very good public servant".  We are yet to hear from Robbins. Chair of the foreign affairs select committee, Emily Thornberry, has asked for the former permanent secretary of the Foreign Office to appear before her committee on Tuesday. The key question for Starmer now is if he misled the House of Commons and is in contempt of parliament… full piece below 👇 #liveblog-body" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">news.sky.com/story/politics…

What do I think really happened with Mandelson and vetting? In October, November and December 2024, No10 indicated it wanted to appoint Peter Mandelson as Ambassador to Washington. It was presented with an array of people telling them not to: Cabinet ministers, spooks, officials in a vetting report. All raised major red flags. Starmer and McSweeny made clear they weren’t interested in any objection, and this must go ahead at all costs. So Mandelson’s appointment was announced mid December 2024. The vetting we are focussed on today came later, in January 2025. Vetting of ambassadors is the responsibility of the FCDO and Olly Robbins. One bit of the system said no - the UKSV agency said don’t appoint Mandelson. We don’t know on what grounds, but probably the grounds No10 had seen and rejected as a reason to block. Olly Robbins cleared Mandelson. Very quietly, Mandelson didn’t get the very highest level of clearance when he got the job, but he got the overall OK because of Robbins. Robbins did No10 a favour. This is because Olly Robbbins knew that going to No10 post announcement, and saying the Mandelson appointment can’t happen, was politically impossible. And civil servants want to deliver for their political masters. So Olly fixed it for Keir: and is now paying a price. Olly Robbins has - incidentally - done No10 a second massive political favour. The really really toxic claim doing the rounds last night was that surely someone - anyone - in No10 DID know the UKSV agency turned down the vetting Olly Robbins is making clear he didn’t tell people the UKSV verdict because that would be inappropriate as part of the process he followed. It’s not even clear he saw it. No10 don’t seem to realise he’s done them a favour, and are releasing documents to challenge alternative versions of events. Let’s see how it plays out. The bottom line is No10 wanted Mandelson come what may. They rammed it through. One quango; post appointment announcement, was never realistically going to be allowed to stop Mandelson taking the job because the top of Government had publicly committed to it. They hadn’t wanted to heed the warnings earlier; and were in too deep That’s where I think we are

Is there any indication that the vetting turned up anything about Mandelson that wasn't already well known, and isn't the political appointment understandable when you reflect that he actually did a pretty good job as ambassador?

@SamCoatesSky If this is proven, Robbins must be arrested and charged with treason @metpoliceuk He knowingly put the security of the UK at risk, without informing the Prime Minister. This is treason of the highest order.

@EssexPR Only the right wing hate him. Trump hates him because he has stood up to his bullying threats. Starmer is the best man to keep us out of Trumps madness. Because of his stance on Israel the Zionist press will do all they can to get rid of him. How much do Mossad pay you Adam ?

@AlistairHaimes Weird take, Mandelson was essentially a fraudster. Also, explain how he did a good job. Trump has a soft spot for us, he was always going to go easy on us. Starmer has killed that, partly through this appointment no doubt.

Robbins inherited the process on Mandelson from predecessor Philip Barton in Jan 2025. What were both these FCDO bosses told (and by who) about No10 wanting Mandelson? Did Robbins believe overruling the vetting was what Starmer wanted, as this was a political appointment?
