Marathon is not the reason we don't have a Destiny 3 right now. The decision to not make a Destiny 3 was decided around 2019 when the Activision split occurred. Biggest reasons for that decision?

@flap_jakes027 Wait until they hear about a huge chunk of Shadowkeep content that was cut because after the split, the Activision studio working on it stopped and it wasn't continued.

@Breshi123 People laud how much content there was in the Forsaken year, but don’t realize how much Vicarious Visions and High Moon helped make that possible.

@blalalalupp I'd recommend looking up more details about the relationship between the two studios and how much Bungie had to rely on needing Activison studio support to keep up with their 10 year contract. If I were them at that time, I'd want out of that contract too.

@5_ideias Bungie can make great things given the time and resources. Unfortunately though, it usually takes them a longer time than we'd all want to be able to output the best things. Final Shape prior to its delay was not going to be as well received. It needed that delay.

So next time you want something to blame for being the reason we don't have a Destiny 3, blame the Activision split. Activision would not have wanted Bungie to continue off D2 only. And if you want to know more about what the D3 they were making in 2018 was? Stay tuned.

Without Activision support studios like Vicarious Visions and High Moon helping, that would become impossible to do within a reasonable time frame. Also, they were no longer bound by contract to make a D3. So why restart from scratch and do it if you were no longer required to?

Our next Major Update, Destiny 2: Shadow and Order, is undergoing large revisions and will be delayed. This update is being changed and expanded to include sizable quality-of-life updates and as a result, will also be renamed. This update will now launch on June 9, 2026. We will provide exact details closer to release covering previously announced Weapon Tier Upgrading, but also additions like expanding Tiered Gear to all Raid and Dungeon activities, Pantheon 2.0, Tier 5 stats for Exotic Armors, and more. Through June, we will continue to have routine bug fixes and stability improvements, continued portal modifiers, Guardian Games (March), and the return of a more frequent Iron Banner cadence (April). In terms of communications, we will be focusing on providing you with updates about our live game content, community activations, and general upkeep through the TWID and our Destiny social channels.
