OOPS, WE BROKE THE OCEAN FLOOR — AND IT’S NOW BURPING OUT CO₂ For years, scientists thought parts of the ocean floor -especially muddy seafloor like in Germany’s Kiel Bight-were carbon sinks, quietly trapping carbon dioxide (CO₂) and helping slow down climate change. Turns out, that only works if we leave it alone. When the seafloor gets disturbed -by things like bottom trawling, storms, or even tides - it stops trapping carbon and starts releasing it... a lot of it. The mud down there is full of pyrite (a mineral also known as “fool’s gold”) and organic matter. When it’s buried, it’s fine. But when it’s stirred up and exposed to oxygen-rich water, pyrite oxidizes, producing acid that turns stable carbon compounds into atmospheric CO₂. In simple terms: disturb the mud, and it starts breathing out CO₂ instead of locking it in. And this isn’t just a tiny burp. The CO₂ emissions from pyrite oxidation are bigger than we thought—even larger than from decaying plants and animals in the same mud. The study’s lab experiments showed that these emissions could weaken the Baltic Sea’s ability to absorb atmospheric CO₂, making climate change worse. The bottom line: we’ve been counting on the ocean floor to help us fight CO₂, but by scraping and shaking it, we’ve turned it into a hidden threat.
