@Athanasius_45 - It would be great if someday one might see a major studio do for Ancient Greek what Mel Gibson did for Aramaic and Latin in "The Passion of the Christ". The Trial of Socrates for example - or many other notable events and lives might make for great material for the learner.

@Athanasius_45 This seems very much akin to the "comprehensible input" method advocated of late wuite convincingly. I found the Netflix drama with German audio and subtitles effective for this (and not a few allusions in that show the Greek mythology and Latin Vulgate if I recall). -

@avaritia_koh @pleaserespond47 @tanuzou1027 It is just my impression but it seems like there was more danger of famine in Japan from relying so heavily on rice so naturally perhaps in such conditions you develop a culture which when finding calories does not let pickiness become the enemy of survival. I am guessing though.

「馬を食べる」っていうのはアメリカ人にとってはかなり衝撃的なことらしいね。 昔勤めていた会社にアメリカ人の同僚が居たんだけど、その人や他の数人と一緒に居酒屋に行った時に馬刺しが出てきて、「これは何の肉？」って聞かれたから「馬の肉だよ、馬の刺身」って答えたら泣いちゃった… 周りの人達はみんな驚いて詳しく聞いたら、馬は友達や家族のようなもので、食べる為に神様が作った家畜とは違う存在って言ってた。 「神様が作った」というのはよく分からない区分だけど、日本人の感覚に例えると、犬や猫を調理したものを目の前に出された感覚に近いのかな？となんとなく理解した。 確かに韓国で犬料理を、中国で猫料理を出されたら私も泣いてしまうかもしれないな……と神妙な顔をしながら、彼の分の馬刺しは日本人が代わりに責任持っていただきました。

@avaritia_koh @pleaserespond47 @tanuzou1027 Perhaps there's no good explanation for the difference - just the history as it unfolded in each region. I would guess that being an Island chain there's simply less tolerance for waste of any sort in Japan. In Europe the more navigable waters don't force such economy of use.

@walterkirn Iran's freedom or lack thereof seems more properly their own concern than mine. If oil and economics are the subtext better to say so. Somehow we survived 250 years without reference to the political arrangements of men 6000 miles from us, I suspect that will remain the case.

Some are betting so hard against a freer Iran that they now have a serious stake in it not happening.

@pleaserespond47 @tanuzou1027 Ah well you could be right. I'm sure a medieval peasant, Legion on the march or whatever wouldn't hesitate - you just don't see it mentioned much or advocated for historically. I imagine the meat would by tougher than beef, mutton, or pork so maybe less desirable.

@BrianDBowers @wylfcen As someone studying philosophy at Uni, I would say that there are loads of modern philosophers dealing with more "practical" questions. Political philosophers and social critics are the most obvious, but there still plenty of moral philosophers out there too

@tanuzou1027 No far before cowboys, it traces back to European culture, generally there's no tradition of eating horses (except perhaps to avoid starvation or in extremely desperate circumstances). Maybe because beef, sheep, pork, fish, or goat was usually available and horses are for travel.

@kuguiart The highest skill in art (in my opinion) means the fewest strokes to depict the scene, just as a samurai might seek the fewest to accomplish his aim. This is universal in art and strategy. If the form is perfectly legible but the strokes are visible its not error but great skill.

@doyyy74 @Eigon_fit - Arabic was a middle category of moderate abstraction, English the most of all. Of course this is not a statement of being "better" just a different evolution of the language and it is also just based on an informal survey not a proof.

@doyyy74 @Eigon_fit - had to develop higher abstraction to convey categories beyond the highly specific customs of any one group - I did an informal survey of word frequency in English Arabic and Chinese and so concluded this. Chinese had more practical terms in the top 5000 daily use words-
