Hello Japan! In this thread I will document making onigiri for dinner tonight. I don't have Japanese mayonnaise or bonito flakes but my sister bought this miso paste last year for something and never opened it, so hamburger onigiri it is. I will update the thread as I go.

@BrianDBowers @tanuzou1027 I've tried it braised and canned. It tastes almost exactly like beef, just a bit leaner. Of course if you slaughter an older working animal, it would be a lot tougher, but that holds for cows as well. Like salmon vs rainbow trout.

@pleaserespond47 @tanuzou1027 Ah well you could be right. I'm sure a medieval peasant, Legion on the march or whatever wouldn't hesitate - you just don't see it mentioned much or advocated for historically. I imagine the meat would by tougher than beef, mutton, or pork so maybe less desirable.

@BrianDBowers @tanuzou1027 I don't think any european would think of it as a taboo, just kind of a pointless waste of a perfectly good horse.

@tanuzou1027 No far before cowboys, it traces back to European culture, generally there's no tradition of eating horses (except perhaps to avoid starvation or in extremely desperate circumstances). Maybe because beef, sheep, pork, fish, or goat was usually available and horses are for travel.

@tanuzou1027 Understandable. For a cowboy, his horse is his best friend. I have eaten horse meat, but I don't think there's a good reason to do that these days, right? It wasn't better than beef and horses need more land to raise.
